Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sang this, the first hit to achieve number one status in 1965? "Well I thought the day I met you you were meek as a lamb Just the kind to fit my dreams and plans Now the pace we're living takes the wind from my sails And it looks like I've got a tiger by the tail"

Answer: Buck Owens

In the liner notes of the box set, "The Buck Owens Collection - 1959-1990",
Buck tells the story of how he and Harlan Howard were trying to write a song, but couldn't come up with a catch-phrase, which is usually found in Buck's songs.

They had the TV on, and when an advert for ESSO (now EXXON) played,"Put a Tiger in your Tank!", they had their catch-phrase!

Buck had a bunch of number one hits on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, but this tune is the only one of his to break the Popular Top-Forty chart, where it peaked a number 25.
2. Do you recall who sang this chart-topper from 1965? "Well, this is it, That day is here, The day I knew would come When you would leave me dear. Well, here I sit, while teardrops fall And wonder why I care When you don't care at all"

Written by Cindy Walker and produced by Chet Atkins, this was the second post-humous number one for Jim.
"This Is It" spent three weeks at number one and a total of 23 weeks on the Country Hot 100.
3. Who sang this next number one hit from 1965? "Who is the girl wearing nothing but a smile And a towel in the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway Rolling down the highway in my Jimmy hauling freight From Chicago to St Louis Lord I see her every day"

Although Del charted over fifty times in his long career, "The Girl on the Billboard" was his only offering to reach number one.
4. Do you recognize these lyrics from 1965? Can you guess who sang them? "What's he doing in my world? What's he doing holding my world? If he's not more than just friend Why were you kissing him? And what's he doing in my world?"

Answer: Eddy Arnold

"What's He Doing in My World?" was a come-back hit for Eddy. It was his 20th chart-topper, but his first in a decade.
Eddy landed on the Hot Country Singles chart an amazing 146 times over a 63-year recording career.
5. Who sang this number one hit from 1965? "Clouds are gathering over my head That kill the day and hide the sun That shroud the night when day is done Ribbon of darkness over me"

Answer: Roy Drusky and Priscilla Mitchell

"Yes, Mr. Peters" is the quintessential cheating song!
The lines follow a conversation between a married man and his paramour, with him pretending to be talking to his boss.
Later in the year, Lorene Mann and Justin Tubb recorded an "Answer" song, "Hurry Mr. Peters", in which the wife of the cheating husband is also cheating, with Mr. Peters!

"(Hello) Hello dear is the coast clear are you all alone
(Yes I am Mr Peters at last my husband's gone)
Did he use me as an excuse again for going out?
(You're right Mr Peters and I almost laughed out loud)
Aw don't he know you can see right through his little game
(Well I guess not Mr Peters he still calls her by your name)"
8. Who recorded this chart-topper from 1965? Answer: Warner Mack

9. Do you recall these lyrics from 1965? Who sang them? "Is it really over, is this the end of the line? Don't tell me I'm losing the love that was mine If you're really leaving, take some part of me So I'll always remember, how sweet love used to be I wonder who's stepping into my shoes, who can he be? I can tell by your eyes our love has died, and it's over for me"

Jim died at the controls of his own plane on July 31, 1964, along with his business manager/piano player, Dean Manuel.
10. Here's our final chart-topping single of 1965. Guess who sang it! "Only you can make my dreams come true Only you can turn my skies to blue Love like ours should not be far apart Only you can break my heart"

Answer: Buck Owens

Buck wrote "Only You (Can Break my Heart)", and the song became his seventh single in a row to peak at the top of the chart. It stayed at number one for only one week, but lingered on the chart for 17 weeks.
11. Do you recall who sang this top hit from 1965? "Behind the tear there's a hurt, Behind the hurt a broken heart, Behind that broken heart there lies a broken dream, Behind the dream there's a fool, behind the fool a wasted love. You broke my heart, and I'm the fool behind the tear"

Answer: Sonny James

Sonny James was known as "The Southern Gentleman".
Written by Ned Miller, "Behind the Tear" was Sonny's third single to reach number one, but definitely not his last!
Sonny scored with another 20 number ones from 1966 thru 1974.
12. Who sang this 1965 top hit? "Kiss me goodbye and write me while I'm gone, Goodbye, sweetheart and hello Vietnam"

Answer: Johnny Wright

"Hello Vietnam" was written by Tom T. Hall.
It was sung by Johnny Wright, one-half of the duo Johnny & Jack, with Johnny's wife Kitty Wells providing back-up vocal.

Jack Anglin, the other half of Johnny & Jack, was killed in a car crash on March 8, 1963, on his way to a memorial service for Patsy Cline, who had been killed in a plane crash three days earlier.
13. Who recorded this number one song from 1965? "May the bird of paradise fly up your nose, May an elephant caress you with his toes, May your wife be plagued with runners in her hose, May the bird of paradise fly up your nose"

Answer: Little Jimmy Dickens

One of my favorite Country Novelty songs, "May the Bird of Paradise Fly up Your Nose" was Jimmy's only chart-topping single. He was a gifted comedian, and most of his recording work was in the Novelty genre.

A slightly-built man, he would perform with a Guitarrón Mexicano (the Spanish name of a "big Mexican guitar"), which highlighted his short stature, to great comedy effect.
14. Do you recognize these lyrics from 1965? Do you remember who recorded them? "Make the world go away, And get it off my shoulders Say the things you used to say, and make the world go away. Do you remember when you loved me, before the world took me astray? If you do, then forgive me, and make the world go away"

Answer: Eddy Arnold

Of the Top Fifty Country Artists of the 1960s, Eddy is ranked number five.
Eddy is ranked number 23 on Billboard's list of the 25 Greatest Country Singers of all time.
15. Our final number one hit single for 1965 was sung by whom? "Trailers for sale or rent, Rooms to let...fifty cents. No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes Ah, but..two hours of pushin' broom Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room I'm a man of means by no means, King of the road"

Answer: Roger Miller

"King of the Road", Roger Miller's fifth single and the second of two top hits.
In addition to reaching the number one position on the Hot Country Singles chart,
the tune reached number one on the UK Singles chart, the Norwegian Singles chart, and the Billboard Easy Listening chart, reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, number five on the Irish Singles chart, and number ten on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart.

Country artist Jody Miller's Answer, "Queen of the House", peaked at number five and won a Grammy, Best Country Female Vocal, that year.
