Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1967 Spyder Turner gave us a rendition of "Stand By Me", which was a terrific cover of the hit by Ben E. King. In the body of the song he did imitations of a number of very famous singers of the era, and mentioned them by name. Not including himself, how many did he name?

Answer: 9

Spyder was a very talented guy, and it is surprising that this was his only hit. It climbed to number 12 on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts. The names mentioned, in order, were Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Eddie Kendrick, Melvin Franklin, David Ruffin, Billy Stewart, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and Chuck Jackson.
2. In 1975, The Captain and Tenille recorded the hit song "Love Will Keep Us Together". What famous singer/songwriter is mentioned in this song?

Answer: Neil Sedaka

The song was actually written by Sedaka and Howard Greenfield in 1973. Sedaka recorded it and it went nowhere. The Captain and Tenille picked it up in 1975 and made it a U.S. Billboard number one hit. They acknowledge Sedaka in the fadeout at the end of the song by singing the lyrics "Sedaka is back, la la la la".
3. 1967 saw "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" become a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary. Which three artists were specifically mentioned in the song?

Answer: The Mamas and Papas, Donovan and The Beatles

The song is from 1967 and made it as high as number nine on the U.S. Billboard Top 100. It allegedly makes fun of the shallow lyrics of the popular songs rock and roll, versus the more serious and socially important words associated with folk music. The specific verses are "I dig the Mamas and The Papas at The Trip Sunset Strip in L.A., they got a good thing going when the words don't get in the way". Later in the song they sing "I dig Donovan in a dream-like tripped out way", and also later in the verse, "and when The Beatles tell you, they've got a word 'love' to sell you, they mean exactly what they say". The song lyrics clearly state that if you really have something to say, the radio stations won't play your music unless you can send out your message cryptically (between the lines).

4. In the song by "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel, which of these artists would you hear mentioned?

Answer: The all are mentioned

As a number one Billboard hit from 1989, Joel's lyrics mentioned all of the above. Verse two has a line which reads "Einstein, James Dean, Brooklyn's got a winning team, Davy Crockett, Peter Pan, ELVIS PRESLEY, Disneyland". Verse three has a line which reads, "BUDDY HOLLY, Ben-Hur, Space Monkey, Mafia...", and Verse four has a line which says, "Hemingway, Eichmann, Stranger In a Strange Land, DYLAN, Berlin, Bay of Pigs Invasion.." Also mentioned in the body of the lyrics are Chubby Checker, Johnnie Ray, and a reference to "Beatlemania".

The song itself recounts events that happened and people that were famous or popular during Joel's lifetime. Joel was born in 1949.
5. A studio group called Reunion had a hit in 1974 with "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)" Can you tell me the artists mentioned in this song?

Answer: Too many to list in this space

This odd song is a rambling list of many rock artists, songs, and celebrities, linked by a chorus which goes, "Life Is a rock, but the radio rolled me, gotta turn it up louder, so my DJ told me, Life Is a rock, but the radio rolled me, at the end of my rainbow, lies a golden oldie".

In between, there are over 100 artists, songs, and personalities mentioned, including such varied artists as The Ray Charles Singers, Sam Cooke, Lesley Gore, Tito Puente, The Rolling Stones, The Archies, John Denver and Anni-Fryd Lyngstad, just to name a few. Songs mentioned include The Loco-Motion, Satisfaction, Rama-Lama Ding-Dong,Gimme Shelter, Didi Dinah, and Camptown Races, just to mention a few. Personalities include Doris Day, Alan Freed and somehow, Jack The Ripper. Strange song, but still managed to hit number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
6. Arthur Conley had his biggest hit in 1967 with "Sweet Soul Music". In the lyrics he mentions some of the top soul artists of the day. Which one of these is NOT mentioned?

Answer: Smokey Robinson

Brown, Redding, and Pickett are all named in verses of the song, along with Lou Rawls and Sam and Dave. Robinson is not mentioned in the song. This song was co-written by Conley and Otis Redding before Redding's untimely death later that year. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts.
7. In the John Cougar Mellencamp song "R.O.C.K. In The USA" there were a number of artists mentioned. The lyrics mention a spotlight on someone. Who was the spotlight on?

Answer: Martha Reeves

This song was off an album called "Scarecrow" and was released in 1986. The song went to number two in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The lines are as follows. "There was Frankie Lymon, Bobby Fuller, Mitch Ryder, they were rockin', Jackie Wilson, ShangriLas, Young Rascals, they were rockin', SPOTLIGHT ON MARTHA REEVES let's don't forget James Brown, Rockin' in the USA..."
8. Lynyrd Skynyrd released a song in 1974 which was their biggest hit. Called "Sweet Home Alabama", it was a rebuttal song to another song by the artist that they mention in the lyrics. Who was it?

Answer: Neil Young

The song itself was a number eight U.S. Billboard Top 100 hit. It was a rebuttal to a pair of songs by Neil Young called "Southern Man", and "Alabama" which had lyrics depicting slavery and racism in the U.S. South. The group's rebuttal was "Sweet Home Alabama" in which they sang of the some of the virtues of being a Southerner.

The verse which deals directly with Young goes as follows. " Well I heard Mister Young sing about her, Well I heard old Neil put her down, Well I hope Neil Young will remember, A southern man don't need him round anyhow".
9. Three Dog Night took "Never Been To Spain" up ther charts in 1972 and mentioned a pretty famous group in their lyrics. Who please?

Answer: The Beatles

"Well I never been to England, but I kinda like The Beatles", starts the second verse of this song which made it to the number five position on the Billboard charts for Three Dog Night that year.
10. In 1987 a New Wave group simply called "ABC" had a hit with a song called "When Smokey Sings". In the body of the song, they mention four other comtemporaries of Smokey Robinson. They are mentioned by first name only. Which of these are NOT mentioned in the song?

Answer: Levi (Stubbs)

The group acknowledges that the song is a tribute to the great Smokey Robinson. Released in 1987, the song made it to number five on the U.S. Billboard charts. The verse in the question is as follows and can be found near the end of the song. "Luther croons, Sly's the original-originator, James screams, Marvin was the only innovator, but nothing can compare, nothing can compare, when Smokey sings"
