quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song features the following lines: "Freddy tried to strangle me with my plastic popper beads, but I hit him back with my pet rat!"

Answer: I Can't Do Anything

A typical Spex song, 'I Can't Do Anything' is quirky, loud, fun, and has many a memorable line.
2. Who originally played sax for the band, but left after some time in favour of school?

Answer: Lora Logic

A year or so after her departure, Lora Logic formed the band Essential Logic, as well as playing saxophone for Red Krayola, The Stranglers, and even Boy George.
3. What is Poly Styrene's real name?

Answer: Marian Elliot-Said

Susan Whitby is Lora Logic's real name, Susan Ballion is Siouxsie Sioux's real name, and Paloma McLardy is the real name of The Slit's drummer, Palmolive.
4. "My mind is like a plastic bag, that corresponds to all those ads..." What's the very next line?

Answer: "It sucks up all the rubbish that is fed in through by ear"

With abstract but ultimately meaningful lyrics, 'Plastic Bag' is another classic Spex song, and also a personal favourite of mine.
5. Which song features the lyric "Yamma yamma yamma, yamma yamma yamma, boring boredom, boring boredom"?

Answer: I Am a Cliche

A song that can only be played loud! Although the song was not released as a single, it still remains extremely popular with X-Ray Spex fans.
6. Poly put an ad in the paper to form her own band. The ad headline simply asked for 'Young punx who want to stick it together'.

Answer: True

After going to a Sex Pistols concert, with only a handful of other people there, Poly was inspired to get her own band together. The headline grabbed the attention of future key members immediately, and before long the band was together and ready to stick it together!
7. Which song begins "I clambered over mounds and mounds of polystyrene foam, then fell into a swimming pool filled with fairy snow'?

Answer: The Day the World Turned Day-Glo

The whole of the album 'Germ Free Adolescents' focused on anti-consumerism and the effects of consumerism, and 'The Day the World Turned Day-Glo' is a perfect example of this.
8. In 1983, Poly was initiated into the Hare Krishna movement.

Answer: True

Poly Styrene was initiated into the Hare Krishna movement. You read it correctly. Having always had a keen interest in certain cultural and life aspects that are involved in Hare Krishna, Poly was finally initiated in the early 80's.
9. On the album cover of 'Germ Free Adolescents', how many test tubes and band members are there?

Answer: Five

The album cover shows all five band members trapped in glass test-tubes, each in unique day-glo attire. This is the only version of the album cover, and has remained exactly the same for the CD release also.
10. Which of the following was Poly famous for wearing?

Answer: Braces

Poly sported chunky braces, a killer hair-do, a weird and wonderful day-glo wardrobe and a heck of a singing voice. She made a very unlikely front woman, but this only made her even more unique, and even more wonderful to watch and listen to.
