Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "It is wonderful to be here in the great state of Chicago." Who said this?

Answer: Dan Quayle, former U.S. Vice-President

Mr Quayle served under U.S. President George H. W. Bush as the 44th Vice-President of the United States, and seemed to have a penchant for making comical statements such as that given above. Chicago of course is not a state at all, but the largest city in the U.S. state of Illinois.
2. Which of the following four characters made this remark: "Eagles may soar high - but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines."?

Answer: John Benfield, actor

John Benfield is a film and television actor who has been around on the screen since 1981. He has appeared in over seventy televisions series or movies. You may recognise him best perhaps as the embarrassing father of the character Howard in the absolutely hilarious British television series, "The Worst Week of My Life".
3. "You can go a long way with a smile. You can go a lot farther with a smile and a gun." Who made this black humour comment?

Answer: Al Capone

Al Capone was an American gangster of the 1920s and 1930s. When he was finally brought to justice, it was for the rather incongruous crime of tax invasion. Seems like it's true then - the only things that can't be avoided are death and taxes.
4. Which world-changing figure made this statement about his work: "If I'd asked my customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse"?

Answer: Henry Ford

American Henry Ford - motor cars - assembly lines - 160 or so other inventions, was born in 1863 and died in 1947. He first made the motor vehicle available for the everyday man in the street with his manufacturing method of mass production, and at prices which were affordable. On his death, he left most of his vast wealth to causes for the benefit and advancement of mankind.
5. "If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?" Who made this comment?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Mr Lincoln was the 16th President of the USA and was assassinated in 1865 whilst still in office. This extraordinary humanitarian and compassionate leader led his country through some of the most tumultuous times in its history and is categorised today, by most scholars, as the greatest president the USA has ever produced.
6. "It is foolish to tear one's hair out in grief. Is sorrow lessened by baldness?" Who posed this rhetorical question?

Answer: Cicero, Roman philosopher and statesman

Cicero lived from 106-43 BC. Not only a philosopher and statesman, he was also a lawyer, constitutionalist and orator. He was eventually murdered by supporters of Mark Antony, whom Cicero had constantly and publicly criticised. Everyone seemed to be assassinated back in ye olde Roman days it seems.
7. Which comical character once said: "His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork"?

Answer: Mae West

A more than accomplished actress and writer, the brazen and extremely funny Mae West, who was born in 1893 and died in 1980, was years ahead of her time with her mastery of the double entendre and met with constant censorship and criticism during her career. Not that it fazed her one bit. She was good at what she did. What's that, Mae? "Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie"?
8. "Although prepared for martyrdom, I prefer that it be postponed." Who made this lugubrious statement?

Answer: Winston Churchill

Politician, writer, painter, journalist, Prime Minister of the UK during its darkest times of the Second World War, Winston Churchill (1874-1965) had an amazing ability with words - and was given the power of oration to deliver them perfectly. This great statesman was renowned for his dry humour as well, as evidenced in the above quote.
9. "By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher." Who gave this tongue-in-cheek advice to young men?

Answer: Socrates

Socrates (circa 469-399 BCE) was a great Greek philosopher, but more is known of him in the various writings of his students and those who had known him personally, than in any of his own writings still in existence. Plato, another great philosopher of the time, was mentored by Socrates, and it is his descriptions of Socrates that most scholars rely upon. Forced to drink hemlock for the crime of corrupting the minds of the young with his teachings, Socrates was another one bumped off by the authorities of the time whom he had dared to criticise publicly.
10. Who said, on being asked his opinion of western civilisation, "I think it would be a good idea"?

Answer: Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhi, who lived from 1869 to 1948, was the political and spiritual leader of the country of India during the time when it was struggling to break away from the control of British rule and become an independent nation. This momentous event occurred in 1947 and Gandhi lived to see his dream become reality.

He was assassinated in January of the following year. Today in that country he is known as the "Father of India".
