Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous person, whose last name is associated with a famous movie studio said "This music won't do. There's not enough sarcasm in it."?

Answer: Samuel Goldwyn

Goldwyn was also known as Samuel Goldfish, and helped to found what is today Paramount pictures, and Samuel Goldwyn Pictures, today part of MGM. Goldwyn was born in 1879 in Warsaw, as Schmuel Gelbfisz. His family emigrated to the United States in 1898. Despite selling to MGM, Goldwyn never made a movie at MGM. His film "The Best Years of Our Lives" netted him the 1946 Best Picture Oscar, the only Best Picture Oscar, Goldwyn won. Goldwyn was honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1971 by Richard Nixon, and passed away at the age of 94 in 1974. Goldwyn's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame can be found at 1631 Vine Street.

This sarcastic quote also belonged to Goldwyn:
- "For your information, I would like to ask a question."
2. "He was happily married - but his wife wasn't". Which famous Danish comedian/musician said this sarcastic quip?

Answer: Victor Borge

Borge was known as "The Clown Prince of Denmark, "The Unmelancholy Dane", and "The Great Dane", among other nicknames. Borge escaped to North America during the Second World War, knowing not a word of English. Borge showed no signs of slowing down, performing sixty shows at the ripe old age of 90! After returning home from a show in Denmark, the comedian passed away on December 23, 2000 at 91 years of age at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut. In accordance with Victor's wish, some of his ashes were buried at the cemetery in Greenwich, complete with a replica of Copenhagen's "The Little Mermaid". The rest are in a cemetery in Copenhagen.

Some more wise words from Borge:
"The difference between a violin and a viola is that a viola burns longer."
3. Which legendary Green Bay Packers coach had this to say about a loss? "We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time."

Answer: Vince Lombardi

Lombardi didn't have many losses over his ten season coaching career, nine of which he spent with the Green Bay Packers, from 1959-67. His 96-34-6 record, included three NFL championships, and the first two Super Bowls. Lombardi never had a losing record in a season, and the NFL's championship trophy is named in his honour. The 9-1 playoff record was only tarnished by a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL championship in 1960. The Brooklyn native entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971, a year after his passing from cancer.

Lombardi also added these lines:
- "Winners never quit and quitters never win."
- "Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser."
- "If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?"
4. Now for some advice from a famous Irish/English playwright, known for "Pygmalion". "Better never than late.". Who was this sarcastic man?

Answer: George Bernard Shaw

A one of the founders of the London School of Economics, the Irish-born, British-raised Shaw's sometimes comedic approach to deep subjects like politics, religion, and class war made him well-known in the UK. Shaw also wrote plays, including "Pygmalion", which won him the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature, and then an Oscar in 1938, for helping in the creation of the movie adaptation. Shaw was the first to win both a Nobel Prize and an Oscar, and remains the only one.

Some of Shaw's other sarcastic quotes include these one-liners:
- "It's easier to replace a dead man than a good picture."
- "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place."
- "I would like to take you seriously, but to do so would be an affront to your intelligence."
5. "I haven't spoken to my wife in years. I didn't want to interrupt her." Those were the words of which famous American "disrespected" comedian and actor?

Answer: Rodney Dangerfield

Born Jacob Cohen, Dangerfield coined the phrase "I don't get any respect!" and his comedic monologues regarding that issue. Not only a comedian, Dangerfield also starred in the movies "Back to School", "Caddyshack", and "Easy Money". After his 2004 death, his epitaph read "There Goes the Neighborhood", in reference to his one of his many lines, "I tell ya I get no respect from anyone. I bought a cemetery plot. The guy said, 'There goes the neighborhood!'.

Here are a few more examples of sarcasm from Rodney.
- "I get no respect. The way my luck is running, if I was a politician I would be honest."
- "I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out."
- "My wife and I were happy for 20 years. Then we met."
6. Which legendary political and military figure, unsurprisingly said "I am easily satisfied with the very best."?

Answer: Winston Churchill

First elected to British parliament in 1900, Churchill held numerous posts for the next 64 years, including Prime Minister during the Second World War, and in the 1950's. Churchill came from a military background, one of his ancestors being the first Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill. Winston had a way with words, and lived a rather lavish life. Churchill's "We Will Never Surrender" speech, given in 1940, remains one of the most famous of all-time.

In terms of sarcasm, Churchill also said:
-"A modest little person, with much to be modest about.",
-"I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly."
7. Which actor and race car driver said this about the night sky? "It's always darkest before it turns absolutely pitch black."

Answer: Paul Newman

Newman lived a busy life. As an actor, Newman starred in movies like "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money". While training to star in the 1969 auto racing movie "Winning", Newman fell in love with racing, and eventually became a champion IndyCar team owner, and participated in sports car racing, capped by a class title in the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. Then Newman looked into the business world, developing "Newman's Own" line of food products in 1982. Newman announced all proceeds would go to charity. The total donated to charity topped $300 million in 2010.

More from Paul Newman:
- "You only grow when you are alone."
- "Who's to say who's an expert?"
- "It is useless to put on your brakes when you're upside down."
8. This U.S. president, whose life was cut short by an assassination, said this: "He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of any man I know."

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln had this to say about a certain lawyer, one whose name has never been known. I'm sure you know that Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, who served during the US Civil War. "Honest Abe's" life was cut short by John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln at Washington's Ford Theatre on April 14, 1865. What you might not know about the man, is that he held dual citizenship, after the small European nation of San Marino offered him honorary citizenship, something which he accepted. The tall man stood nearly 7 feet tall, when he wore his iconic top hat.

Being the honest man he was, it's pretty hard to find any other sarcastic lines from Abe.
9. Which "adventurous" author said these sarcastic lines? "Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint." "Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please."

Answer: Mark Twain

The author of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", and the sequel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", Twain's real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. The humorist also used pen names such as Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass in some humorous letters. He worked as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before becoming an accomplished writer. Clemens/Twain was born during a visit by Halley's Comet on November 30, 1875, and correctly predicted throughout his lifetime that he'd "go out with it as well". Sure enough, he passed away the day after its next visit on April 21, 1910.

Other sarcastic quotes from Mark Twain:
- "Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper."
- "Action speaks louder than words but not nearly as often."
- "Honesty is the best policy -- when there is money in it."
- "Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow."
10. "A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five!". This child of five, was best known for the group made up of him and his two of his brothers. Married three separate times, he also sarcastically stated that "Marriage is the chief cause of divorce." Who is this character?

Answer: Groucho Marx

Considered one of the most quick-witted comedians of all-time, Marx had many sarcastic quotes to say during his career. Groucho's signature cigar and glasses gave him a legendary one-of-a-kind appearance. Groucho later hosted the radio and TV game show "You Bet Your Life" in the 1940's and 1950's. Marx passed away from pneumonia in 1977.

Groucho could be dubbed the "King of Sarcasm". Here are some of his gems:
- "No, Groucho is not my real name. I am breaking it in for a friend."
- "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."
- "A man is as young as the woman he feels"
