Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First, which of the following actresses was born in Belgium?

Answer: Audrey Hepburn

Perhaps this is common knowledge, but I personally was surprised that the star of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "My Fair Lady" was Belgian. I always thought she was from Birmingham.
2. Which of the following musical instruments was invented by a Belgian?

Answer: Saxophone

The saxophone was patented by Adolphe Sax in 1846, which explains why Belgium will forever be associated with jazz.
3. In the world of comic strips, which of the following titles was NOT created by a Belgian?

Answer: Asterix

Hergé, Peyo and Franquin were all Belgian. I confess I've never read any of the "Guust Flater" series, but a quick tour of the internet suggests he's very popular and looks a bit like Dustin Hoffman.
4. A vaccine for which of the following conditions was developed by a Belgian?

Answer: Whooping Cough

Apart from this, Jules Bordet also discovered that a bactericidal factor in mammalian blood serum binds with antigen-antibody complexes to produce anti-body caused immunity. He won the 1919 Nobel medicine prize for this, possibly because the jury didn't want to admit that they didn't understand what he'd done.
5. Which of the following fictional detectives was created by a Belgian?

Answer: Maigret

Georges Simenon, creator of Maigret, was a Belgian. Scientific tests have determined that 90% of people, if asked to name a famous Belgian, will plump for Hercule Poirot, but he was of course created by a Briton.
6. At the 1996 Olympics, in which of these sports did a Belgian competitor win a gold medal?

Answer: Swimming

Fred Deburghgraeve won the 100m breaststroke. Combined with a win in Judo, this meant that Belgium won more gold medals than Great Britain (for further details of this, see my other quiz "The British Suck at Sport").
7. Which part of a car was invented by, among others, a Belgian?

Answer: The internal combustion engine

The Belgian, Etienne Lenoir, was one of several to "invent" and patent an internal combustion engine.

The "Belgometer", a device for measuring the number of Belgians present in a vehicle at any given time, does not in fact exist. Shame on you if you thought otherwise.
8. Which member of the Beatles was Belgian?

Answer: None of them

I'm running out of famous Belgians to put in my quiz. Can you tell?
9. Now art. All of the artists below were (more or less) Belgian, except one? Which one?

Answer: Degas

Bosch and Rubens were technically Flemish, but it's close enough, I'm sure you'll agree.
10. Which of the following world records was set by Belgians in 1999?

Answer: Largest Ghent Waterzooi

The Ghent Waterzooi is a Belgian traditional dish, and the largest ever was created by students from the Technisch Instituut Tweebruggen in 1999. The "Guinness Book of Records" does not state which lectures they skipped to make it.
