Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1901, Annie Taylor was the first woman to do what?

Answer: Go over Niagara Falls in a barrel

Aged 63 at the time, one wonders if Annie was perhaps a sandwich short of a picnic to attempt this in the first place. She was a school teacher by trade. Being an ex-school teacher myself, I think her pupils had probably driven her insane. As Annie staggered out of the barrel - yes, she survived - she said she'd rather stand in front of a cannon that was about to explode than go through that experience again. Well, duh.
2. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt was the first American to be awarded which prize?

Answer: Nobel Prize for Peace

Mr Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States (from 1901 to 1909) received this honour for his mediation efforts in ending the 1904-05 war between Russia and Japan.
3. In 1910, Alice Wells became the first woman to enter which profession in the United States?

Answer: Policewoman

Alice was even allowed to design her own uniform - which was probably just as well. Can you imagine any policeman of the time designing a uniform for women? It'd probably come complete with an apron. Alice was also a minister of the cloth. Perhaps she thought she could deal with sin in a more proactive way by becoming a police officer. Either way, she did a excellent job and worked in that capacity for thirty years.
4. In 1921, Margaret Gorman became the first winner of which competition?

Answer: Miss America

Margaret was only 16 at the time and her physical measurements were 30-25-32. This was the era of the flapper when girls and women were expected to be slender and languid. With those scrawny measurements, I quite seriously believe that instead of being awarded Miss America, Margaret should have been awarded Miss Pretzel of the Year.
5. In 1934, Horton Smith won which inaugural championship?

Answer: First Masters Golf Tournament

Georgia, known as the "Peach State", was established in 1732 and was the last of those original thirteen colonies represented on the American flag today. Horton won this tournament, it records, under the magnolia trees in Georgia. Peachy keen. Interestingly, Horton Smith then went on to play in every Masters Tournament after this achievement until his death in 1963.
6. In 1936, Wallis Warfield Simpson was awarded which magazine honour?

Answer: First Time Magazine Woman of the Year

Oh dear, I truly think most British people would have heartily disagreed with that honour. Wallis Simpson was the woman for whom King Edward VIII of England abdicated the throne. To do her justice, she tried to talk him out of it, but come hell or high water, he was determined to walk away from the responsibilities of kingship to be with the woman he loved.

Theirs is a sad and foolish love story really - but a love story nevertheless.
7. In 1952, Patricia McCormick became the first woman in which profession?

Answer: Bullfighting

Shame on her. And with an Irish name and all. It's a barbaric and cruel sport. During her career, she was gored by six bulls, one of which was so serious that a priest administered the last rites to her. I guess nobody gave the same consideration to the bulls she killed. They were probably eaten instead.
8. In 1963, Lyndon Baines Johnson became the first American President to wear what?

Answer: Contact Lenses

Sorry, but who cares? President Johnson was known for far greater and far worse achievements during his time as President of the most powerful country in the world - but makes international news for being the first President to wear contact lenses? How inn-ocular-ous.
9. In 1964, actor Peter Sellers became the first male to appear on the cover of which American magazine?

Answer: Playboy

A gruesome thought. One certainly can't deny the abilities of Sellers as a comic genius of screen and radio - but Adonis he wasn't.
10. In 1977, Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify and participate in which race?

Answer: Indianapolis 500

And they say that woman can't drive. Janet competed in a total of eleven Indy races in all, with her highest gained place a fifth. Before she became a professional race driver, she was an aerospace engineer. Bit of a rev head, that gal, it seems.
