Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was William Henry Bragg born?

Answer: Cumberland, England

WH Bragg was born in Cumberland, England in 1862. His father, Robert, was a merchant navy officer and his mother, who died when William Henry was only seven, was the daughter of a minister. After the death of his mother, William Henry was brought up by his uncle (also William Henry) and attended school in Leicestershire and the Isle of Man.
2. How are William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg related?

Answer: Father and son

William Henry Bragg married Gwendoline Todd (whose father was the Postmaster General of South Australia) in 1889. Their son William Lawrence was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1890; another son and a daughter completed the family.
3. Where was William Henry Bragg's first academic posting?

Answer: University of Adelaide, Australia

After completing his studies in England, William Henry was appointed to the academic staff of the then-fledgling University of Adelaide in 1885 and began work there in 1886. He resigned from his position in Adelaide in 1909 to take up a professorship at the University of Leeds. From Leeds, he moved to University College, London and finished his career at the Royal Institution.
4. What was so important about William Lawrence's broken arm in 1895?

Answer: Its treatment involved the first reported surgical use of x-rays.

William Lawrence Bragg broke his arm at the age of five by falling off his tricycle. His father, having heard about Roentgen's experiments with x-rays, decided to use them to get a clear picture of the break in his son's arm. In doing so, he was the first to make use of x-rays as a medical tool.
5. In which branch of science did the Braggs jointly win the Nobel Prize?

Answer: Physics

The Braggs won the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on the use of x-rays in determining crystal structure. Aged just 25, William Lawrence Bragg was the youngest winner of the Nobel Prize at the time. Sadly, around the same time as he received the news of his Nobel Prize win, William Lawrence also received the news that his brother had been killed in action at Gallipoli.
6. William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg were both knighted.

Answer: True

William Henry was knighted in 1920; his son William Lawrence received the same honour in 1941. Besides the Nobel Prize, both Braggs received numerous other awards and honours in their respective lifetimes. William Henry was elected President of the Royal Society in 1935 and William Lawrence received the Society's highest honour, the Copley Medal, as did his father before him.
7. Which of the following is named after one or both of the Braggs?

Answer: All of these.

The University of Adelaide's first year physics teaching laboratories are located in a building called The Braggs, named after both father and son. King William's College has a lecture theatre named after William Henry. The Bragg state electorate in South Australia covers part of eastern suburban Adelaide.

The Bragg equation (or Bragg's Law), developed by William Lawrence, relates wavelength, incident angle of radiation and atomic distance and is of great use in x-ray crystallography.
8. William Henry Bragg worked on research in what area during World War I?

Answer: The location of submarines using underwater sounds.

William Henry was back in England at the time of the first World War, having taken up his position at Leeds in 1909. He helped the government by conducting research on underwater sounds and the potential applications of these sounds in locating submarines. It is likely that his knighthood was partly in acknowledgment of this work.
9. In what major scientific discovery did William Lawrence Bragg play a part?

Answer: The determination of the structure of DNA.

Francis Crick and James Watson, known for their Nobel Prize-winning effort of elucidating the structure of DNA, worked under William Lawrence Bragg at the Cavendish Laboratories in Cambridge. Bragg provided support to both scientists during their work, with the x-ray crystallography theories he developed playing a major role in the determination of the structure of DNA.

It was Bragg himself who nominated Crick, Watson and molecular biologist Maurice Wilkins for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
10. The Australian Institute of Physics awards the Bragg Gold Medal for Excellence in Physics every year. For what achievement is this honour awarded?

Answer: The best PhD thesis (dissertation) by a student at an Australian University.

The Bragg Gold Medal for Excellence in Physics commemorates both William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg. One side of the medal features a likeness of William Lawrence and the other side a likeness of William Henry. Both father and son made such important and wide-ranging contributions to the world through science that it is only fitting that they be remembered for their work.
