William Blount was the first territorial governor. When Tennessee became a state, he was appointed to a senate seat. He became involved in a scheme to take a military brigade to Spanish Florida. He was impeached and was pleaded guilty. He came back to Tennessee as a hero because he wanted to extend the country.

John Sevier led a "volunteer" group of Tennesseans over to protect the state from invasion. His army met Patrick Ferguson and his British comrades at Kings Mountain, South Carolina. The American victory was a southern turning point to the Revolutionary War.
