Morbid Curiosity: Famous Last Words Quiz

I'm sure all of us wonder about the validity of quoted last words; but it's fun to believe that our heroes and villians have the clarity of mind to leave us with these supposedly true, amusing verbal endings.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh, dear Lord. Oh, mother."

Answer: Frank Sinatra

His family quoted him as saying "I'm losing it." In truth, they were all supposedly stunned that 'Old Blue Eyes' was thinking of his deceased mother rather than any of them on his deathbed.
2. "Oh, you young people act like old men. You are no fun."

Answer: Josephine Baker

This lady was a fabulous character and an amazing performer who broke most of the rules and was a pioneer for women and people of color everywhere. Read her biography; you won't be sorry! Apparently, her last words were spoken to a young fellow in Paris who was trying to take her home when she really wanted to stay out and have fun.

She was a few decades older than him at the time, and died in her sleep of a stroke, later that night.
3. "Shoot, you coward; you're going to kill a man."

Answer: Che Guevara

An Argentinian revolutionary who among other things, helped Castro defeat Batista in the late fifties. He was executed in Bolivia and witnesses claim that the above were his last words. Edward Teach was Blackbeard's real name, by the way.
4. "My work here is done. I am going back to sleep now."

Answer: Pablo Neruda

One of my favorite poets, Chillean born Neruda was a dreamy sensualist with words. His "100 Love Sonnets" is a must have for any reading collection. His supposed last words were as lovely as his poems.
5. "Useless, useless."

Answer: John Wilkes Booth

Booth made this statement after being fatally shot in the back of his head. It entered in almost the exact spot where he had placed Lincoln's fatal bullet just hours before. Supposedly, Booth was staring at his hands as he spoke.
6. "There ain't nobody gonna shoot me."

Answer: Lee Harvey Oswald

Talk about your wrong answers! Oswald, the man held responsible for the assassination of John F. Kennedy, was shot point blank by Jack Ruby while being transferred from City Hall to the county jail. He was surrounded by policemen and the press. The photo of his assasination is infamous.
7. "I've just had eighteen straight whiskies. I think that's the record."

Answer: Dylan Thomas

Eighteen, youch! All of the people listed in this question were very familiar with the bottle. Except for Hemingway, who committed suicide, Thomas was the youngest to succumb to the crippling effects of alcoholism. The others may have had stronger genes, but their hard living definitely contributed to each man's demise. Thomas was 39 when he died.

It is interesting to note that Thomas's most impressive work was done in his teens to mid twenties.
8. "Brothers and sisters, stay cool!"

Answer: Malcolm X

In 1965, X was shot by gunmen from the Nation of Islam while giving a speech. He stayed at his podium in an attempt to maintain order. Very courageous.
9. "Does nobody understand?"

Answer: James Joyce

To this day, Joyce is considered a literary genius and his material is widely discussed and appreciated. Back in his time, Joyce struggled to cope with the fact that few understood or wanted any of his works. He lived an impoverished, hard life.
10. "Farewell my friends. I go to glory."

Answer: Isadora Duncan

In addition to my morbid curiosity, I also have a morbid sense of humor. Isadora was a very famous and flamboyant choreographer in the early 1900's. She gave this prophetic little farewell speech after attending a friend's party, jumped into the back seat of her car and was strangled as the enormously long scarf she was wearing caught in the wheels of her automobile.

Her driver was unable to stop the car in time to prevent her death. Isadora became a literal fashion victim!
