1. Which year did saw the death of Richard III?

Answer: 1485

Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field, 22nd August 1485. He was born on the 2nd October 1452 and came to the throne on 22nd June 1483, after a statement was read out at St Paul's naming him king. On 9th April 1484 his only legitimate son, Edward of Middleham, died.
2. Best known for his victory at Hastings, when did William the Conqueror die?

Answer: 1087

William died at the age of 59 in Rouen. He had suffered severe abdominal injuries when falling from his horse after the burning of Mantes.
In 1066 he defeated King Harold at Hastings and in 1072 he inavded Scotland and defeated Malcolm. His wife, Matilda, died in 1083. William never saw the completed Domesday Book which he ordered be made.

Elizabeth I died on 24th March 1603 at the age of 69. In 1588 she had defended England from Philip's Spanish Armada and in 1598 her most trusted advisor, Lord Burghley, died. On 19th April 1600, William Adams became the first Englishman to arrive at Usaki in Bungo on the island of Kyushu, Japan, thus establishing diplomatic links with the country.

Henry II came to the throne in 1154 and was the first Plantagenet king of England. On 29th December 1170, Becket was murdered in the Cathedral at Canterbury. In 1183, Henry, the young king, died but the quarrelling between Henry II's sons continued. Henry II died in Chinon on 6th July 1189.
5. George V was the first British monarch of the House of Windsor. When did he die?

Answer: 1936

He died on the 20th January 1936. His reign had started in 1910, and on the 17th July 1917 he changed the family name from the very German sounding House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the House of Windsor. In 1932 George gave the first Christmas speech by radio which has since been a regular event.

The execution took place on 30th January 1649. Although coming to the throne on the 27th March 1625, he was not crowned until 2nd February 1626. On 4th January 1642, Charles entered the House of Commons with an armed force to arrest his opponents only to find they had already left.

In 1645, the Battle of Naseby saw the Parliamentarian's New Model Army totally defeat the army of the king.

In 950, Hywel Dda, King of Dyfed, Powys and Gwynedd died. Not much is known of the actions of Owain Glyndwr after 1412 whilst in 1283 Edward I had started building Caernarfon Castle to keep the Welsh under control.

Mary had been born on the 8th December 1542. In 1567 her second husband, Lord Darnley was found dead in the garden at Kirk O'Field and on 24th July she was forced to abdicate. In 1578, her third husband, Bothwell, died in prison in Denmark. He had gone mad by this time.

His reign lasted for less than a year, starting on the 20th January 1936 and ending on the 11th December. In a private ceremony in 1937 he married Wallis Warfield (Mrs. Simpson had changed her name by deed poll) and in the same year made an ill-advised visit to Nazi Germany.

In 1953 they watched the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on television from their home in Paris. In 1972 he died from throat cancer brought on by heavy smoking.

John came to the throne on the 6th April 1199 on the death of his brother, Richard known as the Lionheart. In November 1209 John was excommunicated by Pope Innocent. On the 15th June 1215, John was forced by his Barons to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede. John finally died on the 19th October 1216 and the throne passed to his young son, Henry III.
