Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who invented the wheel?

Answer: Sumerians

It was around 3480 BC.
2. Who invented the first airplane to achieve sustained, controlled and powered manned flight?

Answer: Orville and Wilbur Wright

It was in 1903. There is some controversy about this, however. Richard Pearse of New Zealand is thought to have been into the air under power before they did, but Pearse himself conceded that the Americans deserved the honor of being the first to make a controlled and sustained flight. It was their machine which serves as the precursor of the modern airplane.
3. Who invented bifocal lenses?

It was in 1775.
4. The carburetor and the motorcycle were both improved and adapted it by the same man. Who was it?

The carburetor was invented in 1876 and the motorcycle in 1885.
5. Who invented the rabies vaccine?

9. Who invented the flush toilet known as the Ajax?

Answer: Sir John Harington

Though Thomas Crapper's name has become closely associated with the flush toilet, he did not invent it. His company manufactured flush toilets beginning in the 1880s based on the designs of Albert Giblin from several decades earlier.

Sir John Harington described his invention in 1596. A working model that was built for Elizabeth I was rejected by the queen for being too noisy.
10. Who invented the foot-powered treadle sewing machine?

Answer: Singer

Full name was Isaac Singer, and it was 1851. Earlier machines were powered by hand-turned wheels on the side of the machine. Though Singer's machine was granted a patent, his machine was an improvement on existing machines rather than a new invention. As a consequence, Elias Howe, who had invented, and held patents on, several sewing machines, was able to sue Singer for breach of patent.
