Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who asked Jesus this question? "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

Answer: The original Twelve Disciples

The question, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?", was asked of Jesus by the original Twelve Disciples, as per Matthew 18:1-5. The passage tells of the disciples getting an answer they were not expecting.

Scripture tells of Jesus calling a little child to come to Him and after setting the child in the midst of them, He made the famous proclamation: "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me."

The teaching was seen as extremely radical at the time, as children in Biblical times were to be seen and not heard.

2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one, according to 1 Samuel 10:21, was an ancestor of King Saul?

Answer: Matri

Matri is mentioned as an ancestor of Saul in 1 Samuel 10:21. The verse is part of a passage telling of Saul, the son of Kish, being selected to become the first king of Israel. However, when the people went looking for Saul to make him king, he couldn't be found. 1 Samuel 10:22 tells of the people inquiring of the LORD about Saul's whereabouts with the LORD answering, "There he is, hidden among the equipment." (The English Standard Version states Saul was hiding among the "baggage".)

Scripture goes on to tell of the people taking Saul from his hiding place and proclaiming him as Israel's first king.

Using various translations of the Bible, 1 Samuel 10:21 is the only place in which Matri is mentioned. As a result, little is known about him.

3. Fill in the missing word from Isaiah 49:1 in the NKJV: "Listen, O coastlands, to Me and take heed you peoples from afar! The LORD has called Me from the womb; from the ________ of My mother He has made mention of My name." (The first three letters of the missing word are 'MAT'.)

Answer: matrix

The missing word from Isaiah 49:1 in the NKJV is 'matrix'.

While the NKJV uses the word 'matrix', such isn't the case for the KJV and the NIV. The KJV states, "The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother...". The NIV offers this translation: "Before I was born the LORD called me; from my mother's womb he has spoken my name."

Many Bible scholars believe Isaiah 49 contains prophecy pertaining to Jesus Christ. For example, see Isaiah 49:5-7.

4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'REA', which one, according to 1 Chronicles 5:5, was a son of Joel?

Answer: Reaiah

Reaiah was a son of Joel, as per 1 Chronicles 5:5. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference.

It must be pointed out other men in the Old Testament are also called Reaiah. However, they too are minor characters with little known about them.

5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'AHI', which one, according to 1 Samuel 21:1, was a high priest in the time of David?

Answer: Ahimelech

Ahimelech was a high priest during the time of David, as per 1 Samuel 21:1. Scripture tells of David and his men fleeing from Saul and visiting Ahimelech who gave the would-be king five loaves of showbread. It would be a costly mistake for Ahimelech as Scripture goes on to tell of Saul ordering his execution. Saul wanted Ahimelech dead because he was loyal to David and not to him.

6. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one, according to 1 Kings 18:3-4, was in charge of the household of Ahab, but worked secretly to save the lives of one hundred prophets of God?

Answer: Obadiah

Ahab, king of Israel, and his wicked wife Jezebel would've had a nuclear meltdown if they knew what Obadiah, the manager of their household, was up to. While Ahab and Jezebel were doing their utmost to kill every prophet of God in Israel, Obadiah was secretly doing his part to protect the lives of the prophets.

1 Kings 18:3-19 tells of Obadiah meeting with Elijah, the best known prophet of the day. During the conversation, Obadiah informed Elijah he had "hid one hundred men of the LORD'S prophets, fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water.

1 Kings 18:3 states Obadiah "feared the LORD greatly" and was in charge of King Ahab's household.

7. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one, according to 1 Chronicles 2:16, was a sister of King David?

Answer: Zeruiah

Zeruiah was a sister of David, as per 1 Chronicles 2:16. According to the verse, David had a second sister, Abigail. Zeruiah was the mother of three sons -- Joab, Abishai and Asahe. Joab was the commander of David's army.

However, when it comes to Zeruiah little is known about her as she is largely mentioned in passing reference.

8. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one, according to Daniel 1:7, was given the new name Abed-Nego by the Babylonians?

Answer: Azariah

Azariah was given the name Abed-Nego by the chief of eunuchs for Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. Three of Azariah's Jewish friends were also given new names. Daniel 1:7 states Daniel was given the name Belteshazzar while Hananiah was given the name Shadrach and Mishael was named Meshach.

(In the KJV and the NIV, Abed-Nego appears as Abednego.)

Scripture goes on to tell of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego being thrown into a fiery furnace and not being hurt by the the flames.

9. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one, according to 1 Kings 22:51, was a wicked king, just like his father Ahab?

Answer: Ahaziah

Ahaziah was the son of Ahab and he became king of Israel, reigning for two years. Unsurprisingly, Ahaziah, similar to his father, is described in Scripture as a wicked king. 1 Kings 22:52 states Ahaziah "did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father."

To avoid confusion, there are two different men called Ahaziah in the Old Testament who reigned as kings. While Ahab's son reigned as king of Israel, the second king called Ahaziah ruled over Judah. The two men ruled in different time frames.

10. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one, according to Numbers 25:6-8, thrust a spear through an Israelite man and his Midianite lover?

Answer: Phinehas

According to Scripture, the Isrealites were camped in Acacia Grove, before entering the Promised Land, when a number of the men began to commit harlotry with the local women. The Israelite men bowed down to false gods of the Midiantes and as a result, the LORD became angry with the Israelites, according to Numbers 25:3.

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar and the grandson of Aaron, became outraged with what was taking place. Numbers 25:6-8 tells of Phinehas taking a javelin and going into the tent of an Israelite man who was with a Midianite woman and killing both of them.

According to the passage, he "thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body."

Scripture states the two killed by Phinehas were Zimri the son of Salu, and Cozbi the daughter of Zur.
