Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everyone's favorite boat in the Bible seems to be Noah's Ark. Children especially love to hear the story of righteous old Noah, who built a huge ark, to save his family and two of each animal from the great flood. What was the ark constructed from?

Answer: Gopherwood

Gen. 6:14 "Make yourself an ark of gopherwood, put various compartments in it, and cover it inside and out with pitch."

This is the only place in the Bible that tells of gopherwood. It remains a mystery as to what wood it exactly was. Some translators think that it describes the type of cut of the lumber; while others think that it was an entirely different kind of wood, possibly unknown to us today.
2. As a child, I had my own Noah's Ark set that had a large plastic ark, small figures of Noah and his family, and numerous pairs of small plastic animals. In the book of Genesis, however, only two specific breeds of animal are mentioned that travelled aboard the famous Ark; what are they?

Answer: A dove and a raven

Genesis 6:8-12, tells us how Noah, once the rains had ceased, sent out a raven to search for dry land. A dove is sent out next, who is unable to find any land. When Noah sends the dove out a second time, the dove returns with an olive branch. On its third excursion from the Ark, the dove does not return.

Noah takes this as a clear sign that it has become safe to leave the Ark. After praying to God for direction, Noah departs from the Ark with his family, and releases all the animals that he has kept safe.

Hurrah for Noah!
3. In Psalm 107, we are told of "They who sailed the sea in ships..." Who are "they" later in the psalm compared to?

Answer: Drunken men

Psalms 107: 25-27 "His command raised up a storm wind which tossed its waves on high. They mounted up to heaven; they sank to the depths; their hearts melted away in their plight. They reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was swallowed up."

This psalm seems to be saying that man is helpless compared to the power of God; sailors caught in a bad storm make a good analogy to show this.
4. In 1 Kings, we read of a king who constructs a fleet (of ships). Who is this king?

Answer: King Solomon

1 Kings 9: 26-28 "King Solomon also built a fleet of ships in Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. And Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, sailors who knew the sea, along with the servants of Solomon. They went to Ophir and took four hundred and twenty talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon."

These passages show the growing wealth of Solomon's kingdom as he became an international trader through the effective use of ships.
5. Jonah was a very stubborn prophet; he was told by God to preach repentance to the people of the great city of Nineveh; but, instead, Jonah tried to flee from God's calling by catching a boat to Tarshish. While the boat was out on sea, God created a huge storm that terrified all aboard the ship. The captain went down into the ship's hold and found Jonah doing what?

Answer: Sleeping

Jonah 1:6 says, "So the captain approached him and said, 'How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.'"

As in Psalm 107, the tiny boat tossing helpless in a huge storm seems to show man's absolute dependence on the mercy of God. Jonah had foolishly thought he could escape God's power by sailing to a distant land; soon Jonah would be trapped in the belly of a large fish, praying deep prayers of thanksgiving that he was still alive.
6. Christ called many of his Apostles from fishing boats. In Matthew 4, Simon (Peter), Andrew, James (son of Zebedee), and John (son of Zebedee) were on the Sea of Galilee when Jesus called to them. Christ tells them that he would make them "fishers of men". What activity, specifically, were John and James doing when Christ called them?

Answer: Getting their nets in order

Many see the analogy of fishermen as being clear for Christ's mission: Just as the fishermen would draw in huge catches of fish with their nets, the words of Jesus, brought forth by these Apostles, would also draw in huge catches of men.
7. Later, in Matthew 8, Christ was on a boat with his Apostles. Jesus, tired from being the center of much attention, fell into a deep sleep. The Apostles, soon after, became terrified and woke Jesus up. Christ, understandably, was upset that his slumber had been disturbed. What caused the Apostles to become so afraid?

Answer: A sudden storm

Matthew 8:26 "He said to them, 'Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?' Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm."

A common Christian theme is the need to trust in Jesus when life becomes stressful and chaotic.
8. Continuing in Matthew, in Chapter 14, Jesus sent the Apostles ahead of him in a boat so he could pray. Later that night, Jesus walked on the water towards the boat. The Apostles saw Christ walking on the water and freaked out! What did the Apostles think that they saw?

Answer: A ghost

Matthew 14:27 "But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.'"

Peter, ever the show-off, asked Christ if he may walk out on the water to him. Jesus told him "Come!" As Peter walked to Jesus, he began to sink and cried out "Lord, save me!"; Christ then reached out his hand and rescued Peter from drowning.

"How little faith you have!" Jesus said to Peter.
9. Switching now to the Gospel of John, in Chapter 21, we read about Peter and seven other Apostles who went fishing one night but failed to catch anything. The next morning, Christ appeared on the shore and told them to cast again off the boat's starboard side. The net became full of fish once cast and the Apostles were amazed at the huge catch. On what body of water did this take place?

Answer: Sea of Tiberias/Galilee

Many think that the Apostles here show an important growth in faith since waking Christ during the storm and later fearing him as he walked on water. Jesus tells them to "let down their nets"; they obey; and, they are rewarded.

Peter, once ashore, is then able to make amends to Christ for denying him three times after Christ's arrest. This re-establishes Peter as the leader of the Apostles.
10. St. Paul, a man of great courage, is spoken about extensively in Acts 23 to 28. Paul gets arrested and is seen by a number of Roman and Jewish officials. Paul ends up appealing to the Roman Emperor; and, as a prisoner, he is taken upon a boat for the journey to Rome. The sailing expedition hits a bad storm and the boat wrecks at sea. Paul is able to swim ashore with the other prisoners and guards. On what island did they land?

Answer: Malta

For me, St. Paul is like the "Indiana Jones" of the Bible. Soon after landing on Malta, Paul is bitten by a poisonous snake. All think that he will die from this deadly attack; but, Paul shows no ill effect, impressing the locals that he is a true man of God.
