Four-Letter Names in the Bible Quiz

After doing quizzes on two-letter and three-letter names in the Bible, it only stands to reason one would be done on four-letter names. I suspect some questions will be easy, others difficult. (The NIV and NKJV were used for this quiz.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with an easy one. According to Genesis 2:19, what was the four-letter name of the first man?

Answer: Adam

Adam, of course, is the correct answer. The creation of mankind is told in Genesis 1:26. According to Genesis 2:7, God formed the first man "from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." The name Adam first appears in Genesis 2:20.
2. What was the four-letter name of Ruth's second husband, as per Ruth 4:13?

Answer: Boaz

Boaz is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Ruth was originally married to Mahlon, the son of Naomi and Elimelek. After her husband died, Ruth ended up marrying Boaz. Their marriage resulted in the birth of Obed, who was the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David. The book of Ruth is largely a report about the romance between Ruth and Boaz.
3. What is the symbolic four-letter name Naomi gave herself after the deaths of her husband and her two sons, as per Ruth 1:20?

Answer: Mara

Naomi called herself Mara which means 'bitter'. She used the name to describe herself after the deaths of the her husband Elimelek and her two sons Mahlon and Kilion, as per the NIV Bible. (In the NKJV, Kilion is called Chilion.) Scripture doesn't say what was the cause of their deaths.

In Ruth 1:20-21, Naomi, in the NKJV, states: "'Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?'"
4. What man with a four-letter name led a group of Israelites back to Jerusalem after they had been living in captivity in Persia?

Answer: Ezra

Ezra was a a priest and scribe who received permission from king Artaxerxes to lead a group of Israelites living in exile back to Jerusalem. Details about Ezra receiving permission from the king are found in the seventh chapter of Ezra. He was the son of Seraiah.

According to Ezra 7:7, Ezra was accompanied on his expedition to Jerusalem by a variety of people, including priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers and temple servants.
5. Out of the four-letter names below, which one was part of the 12 spies Moses sent into Canaan? (Numbers 13:7)

Answer: Igal

Igal was one of the 12 spies sent by Moses into Canaan, according to Scripture. Numbers 13:7 states he was the son of Joseph and was from the tribe of Issachar. Out of the 12, only Caleb and Joshua came back to Moses with promising reports about the land of Canaan. Scripture states the ten other spies who gave unfavorable reports died of a plague before the LORD.

The story of the twelve spies is told in Numbers 13 and 14.
6. Out of the four-letter names below, which one was a judge of Israel? (Judges 10:1)

Answer: Tola

According to Judges 10:1-2, Tola judged Israel for 23 years. Scripture states Tola was the son of Puah and the grandson of Dodo and he lived in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim. According to the two verses, Tola "rose to save Israel". Scripture states after Tola died he was buried in Shamir.
7. Out of the four-letter names below, which one was a son of Rehoboam, as per 2 Chronicles 11:20?

Answer: Ziza

Ziza is the correct answer, but little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Scripture, Rehoboam married Maakah daughter of Absalom and they were the parents of Ziza, Abijah, Attai and Shelomith. Chronicles 11:21, in the NIV Bible, states: "Rehoboam loved Maakah daughter of Absalom more than any of his other wives and concubines.

In all, he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters."
8. Out of the four-letter names below, who became the king of Israel when Elah was murdered by Zimri at Tirzah (1 Kings 16:15-27)

Answer: Omri

Omri is the correct answer. According to the 16th chapter of 1 Kings, he became king when Elah was murdered by Zimri at Tirzah. Previously, Omri was commander of the army, as per 1 Kings 16:16. For some time, there was opposition to his reign with a portion of the population supporting Tibni to become king.

1 Kings 16:21-22, in the NKJV, states: "Then the people of Israel were divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king, and half followed Omri. But the people who followed Omri prevailed over the people who followed Tibni the son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri reigned."
9. Out of the 27 books in the New Testament, which is the only one to have an account of the raising of the widow's son from the dead at Nain as well as reports of two of the most popular parables, The Prodigal Son and The Good Samaritan?

Answer: Luke

Luke is the only book in the Bible to have accounts of the raising of the widow's son from the dead at Nain as well as the two popular parables. There are a number of other accounts that also appear in only Luke.
10. Who is traditionally credited with writing five books in the New Testament?

Answer: John

John is traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John 3 John and Revelation. Some scholars dispute this belief, however.
