Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Herod's wife was conniving and vindictive and was responsible for having John the Baptist beheaded. What was the name of his evil wife? (Mark 6:22)

Answer: Herodias

Matthew 14:6-12 reports Herod hosted a lavish birthday party for himself and when the daughter of his wife Herodias danced at the reception, Herod was so pleased he told the unnamed girl he would give her whatever she asked for. Verse 8, in the NKJV Bible, states: "So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter'."

Verse 11 goes on to tell of this macabre scene: "And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother."

Herodias was not only conniving, but extremely vindictive. When she left her first husband (Herod Phillip I) and married his half brother Herod Antipas, John the Baptist was disgusted and denounced the union, according to the 14th chapter of Matthew. As a result, Herod ordered the arrest of John the Baptist and from this point on, his fate was sealed as Herodias had him in her evil clutches.
2. Out of the words below, what one would BEST describe Timothy, a worker in the early church?

Answer: Young

Timothy is known for being young, with the apostle Paul telling him not to feel inferior because of his age. In 1 Timothy 4:12, he tells Timothy "don't let anyone look down on you because you are young." In 1 Corinthians 4:17, he refers to Timothy as his son.

In addition to his youth, Timothy is also known for being timid. In 1 Corinthians 16:10, Paul tells the believers at Corinth "when Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear."
3. After Judas Iscariot committed suicide, who was selected to become his replacement, as per Acts 1:26?

Answer: Matthias

Judas Iscariot, one of the original Twelve Disciples, hanged himself after betraying Jesus prior to the crucifixion, and Matthias was selected to replace him. Judas Iscariot's suicide is reported in Matthew 27:5. Meanwhile, the selection of Matthias is reported in Acts 1:12-26. He was selected over Joseph, called Barsabas, according to Scripture.

However, little is known about Matthias as his name appears in only the first chapter of Acts.
4. What was the name of John the Baptist's mother? (Luke 12:5)

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist even though she and her husband were both "well advanced in years", according to the first chapter of Luke. Luke 1:5 states Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron. Meanwhile, Luke 1:39-45 tells of Elizabeth meeting with Mary, the teenage girl who, while still a virgin, was pregnant with Jesus. Elizabeth and Mary were relatives and their offspring would change the course of history.
5. 'Widow's Son Raised From the Dead' would be a fitting headline for an incident that took place in a small Israelite community, providing there were newspapers in the days of Jesus of Nazareth. The account of Jesus raising the widow's son from the dead is found in Luke 7:11-17. What was the name of the community in which Jesus raised the young man from the dead?

Answer: Nain

Nain is the correct answer. Incidentally, this is the only place in the entire Bible where Nain is mentioned.

Luke 7:11-15, in the NKJV Bible, reports: "Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, 'Do not weep.' Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.' So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother."

According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Nain is about ten miles south of Nazareth.
6. Acts 5:1-11 tells of Sapphira and her husband being struck dead by God for withholding money from the early church. What was the name of her husband?

Answer: Ananias

Ananias and Sapphira were stuck dead after selling their property and withholding part of the money from going to the Lord's work, as per Acts 5:1-11.

According to Scripture, they were struck dead after they met separately with Peter and both claimed they had turned over the entire proceeds from the sale of their property.

Acts 5:3-5, in the NKJV, states: "But Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.' Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last."

According to Scripture the same thing happened three hours later to Sapphira.

Acts 3:11 tells of "great fear" coming upon members of the early church.
7. Out of the four names below, which one is NOT found in the New Testament of the KJV, NKJV and the NIV?

Answer: Esther

Esther is the correct answer. She has a book in the Old Testament named after her and using the NKJV, her name appears 48 times in the book. However, her name is not found elsewhere in the Old Testament or at all in the New Testament.

In the NKJV, Ruth's name appears once in the genealogy of Christ in Matthew 1:5 and Adam's name is found a total of eight times. Adam's s name appears once in Luke, twice in Romans, twice in First Corinthians, twice in First Timothy and once in Jude.

Meanwhile, David's name is found 56 times in the New Testament using the NKJV. Here's the breakdown -- 16 times in Matthew, seven times in Mark, twelve times in Luke, once in John, ten times in Acts, four times in Romans, once in Second Timothy, twice in Hebrews and three times in Revelation.

Esther's original name was Hadassah and she was raised by her cousin Mordecai. She would become queen and play a pivotal role in derailing a diabolical scheme by Haman to exterminate the Jewish population in the vast area ruled by the man who is known as Ahasuerus in the NKJV and Xerxes in the NIV.
8. What's the name of the man in Romans 16:9 who is described by Paul in the NKJV as a "fellow worker in Christ"?

Answer: Urbanus

Urbanus is described by Paul in Romans 16:9 as a "fellow worker in Christ". (In the NIV, he is described as a "co-worker.") However, not much is known about Urbanus as he is mentioned in only this verse in Scripture. In the NKJV Bible, Paul simply states: "Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys, my beloved." In total, Paul extends greetings to twenty-nine people in the sixteenth chapter of Romans with ten of them being women.
9. According to Mark 16:9 and Luke 2, how many demons did Jesus drive out of Mary Magdalene?

Answer: Seven

The correct answer is seven. Mark 16:9, as well as Luke 8:2, state Jesus had driven seven demons out of Mary. However, no details are given with the verses simply stating the demons had been driven out previously.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state only Mark 16:9 and Luke 8:2 make reference to Jesus driving seven demons out of Mary "which would explain her strong devotion to Him."
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with a nine-letter name of a man who was an adversary of the early church and mentioned by Paul in 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy.

Answer: Hymenaeus

Hymenaeus is the correct answer. However, not much is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. Nevertheless, it's apparent Paul had little use for Hymenaeus.

In 1 Timothy 1:18-20, Paul states: "This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme."

2 Timothy 2:16-18 Paul writes: "But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some."
