Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rebekah, in Genesis 27:46 in the NIV Bible, states she "is disgusted with living" as a result of her son Esau marrying Hittite women and confesses if Jacob does the same her life "will not be worth living." In Genesis 30:1, who was the second woman to express similar sentiments about life not worth living when she said "give me children, or I'll die!"?

Answer: Rachel

The correct answer is Rachel. This wife of Jacob was barren for a number of years and was so distraught she thought life wasn't worth living. According to Scripture, the LORD enabled Rachel to conceive and she gave birth to Joseph. (Genesis 30:22-24.) She would die giving birth to a second son, Benjamin. In other words, her statement 'give me children, or I'll die' became prophetic.
2. According to Genesis 24:65, Rebekah is the first woman specifically named in the Old Testament to cover her face with a veil. What's the name of the second person mentioned in Scripture covering her face with a veil, as per Genesis 38:14?

Answer: Tamar

Tamar, the daughter-in-law of Judah, is the correct answer. It's a long story. Tamar was a widow after her first two husbands were struck dead by the LORD due to their evil ways, as per the 38th chapter of Genesis. Determined to have more children, Tamar apparently set out be impregnated by Judah.

Genesis 38:14 tells of Tamar taking off her widow's clothes and covering her face with a veil to disguise herself. Scripture goes on to state Judah saw Tamar sitting by the side of the road, and not recognizing her, he mistook her for a prostitute. He ended up sleeping with her and Scripture reports that about three months later it was revealed Tamar was pregnant. However, she had kept her veil over her face during intercourse and Judah didn't realize he was sleeping with his daughter-in-law.
3. The first person to be struck down by the LORD was Lot's wife. Who was the second person put to death by the LORD, as per Genesis 38:7? (Yes, I know the entire population of the world, with the exception of Noah and his family, perished in the flood in the seventh chapter of Genesis and the population of Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed at the same time Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt, but this question is based on an individual being stuck down, not a collective body.)

Answer: Er

The correct answer is Er, the son of Judah and husband on Tamar. According to Scripture, he was put to death by the LORD for being wicked. However, no details are given about his wickedness. Genesis 38:6-7, in the NIV Bible, simply states: "Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death."

Incidentally, Tamar would become the wife of Onan, Er's brother, and he too was put to death by the LORD. Genesis 38:8-10, in the NIV Bible, states: "Then Judah said to Onan, 'Sleep with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.' But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death also."
4. According to the 17th chapter of 1 Samuel, Jesse had eight sons, including David. Eliab was the oldest of the eight, Scripture states. Who was the second oldest, as per verse 13?

Answer: Abinadab

Abinadab is the correct answer. 1 Samuel 17:13-15 in the NIV Bible, states: "Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab; the second, Abinadab; and the third, Shammah. David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father's sheep at Bethlehem."

The story of David killing the Philistine giant Goliath with a slingshot is reported in this chapter. According to verse 40, David was armed with five smooth stones but four of them were not needed. Verse 49 states David fired a stone at Goliath and it sunk in his head; Goliath fell face down.

David finished things off by beheading Goliath, as per verse 51.
5. Out of these Old Testament books, which one does not have a second part to it in Christian Bibles?

Answer: Judges

Judges is the correct answer. The books of Samuel, Kings and Chronicles all have a second part. In other words, in the Old Testament you will find 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings and 1 and 2 Chronicles. Judges, however, does not have a second part.
6. Out of these New Testament books, which one does not have a second part to it?

Answer: Acts

Acts, a history of the early church, is the correct answer. Corinthians, Timothy and Peter all have a second part. In other words, you will find 1 and 2 Corinthians, 1 and 2 Timothy and 1 and 2 Peter in the New Testament. Thessalonians also has two parts while John has three parts. Acts, however, does not have a second part.
7. The book of Acts tells of the apostle Paul appearing before two Roman governors of Judea, with the first one being Felix. According to Acts 24:27, what was the name of the second governor? (Hint: He's the man who replaced Felix.)

Answer: Festus

After Paul presented a legal argument before Festus and King Agrippa, it was decided he should go to Rome to make his appeal as he was a Roman citizen. However, according to Acts 26:32, Agrippa told Festus he did not see any reason for Paul to be held in custody.

The passage, in the NIV Bible, states: "Agrippa said to Festus, 'This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar'." According to the Web site Biblical-Baby-Names.com, Festus means 'joyous'.
8. In the 12th chapter of 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul writes about people in the church with special gifts. In verse 28, Paul tells of special people who have been placed in the church by God with the first on the list being apostles. Who is second on the list after apostles?

Answer: Prophets

The correct answer is prophets. 1 Corinthians 12:28, in the NIV Bible, states: "And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues."

Verses 29-31 go on to state: "Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts."

In the next chapter, Paul writes about the true meaning of love with the Scripture becoming commonly known as the Love Chapter.

9. In Revelation 4:7, John of Patmos writes about seeing four living creatures with the first being like a lion. How is the second creature described?

Answer: like an ox

The second living creature was like an ox, according to Scripture. It's often difficult to come up with an explanation of what is recorded in Revelation as there are so many different views on the book. In my opinion, I see the book as the Tale of Two Cities -- Babylon the Fallen and the New Jerusalem.

With that disclaimer out of the way, here's how Revelation 4:6-8, reads in the NIV Bible: "Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come'."
10. Revelation 21:19 (NIV) tells of the foundations of the city walls of the New Jerusalem being decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, according to Scripture. What was the second one?

Answer: sapphire

The correct answer is sapphire.

Revelation 21:16-21, in the NIV Bible, states: "The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass."
