Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Use some letters from LAMENTATIONS to fill in the missing word from Lamentations 1:1, as per the NIV Bible: "How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the ______! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave."

Answer: nations

Lamentations appears after Jeremiah and before Ezekiel, and the Hebrew title of the book is 'ekah ("How...!"), according to notes in the NIV Study Bible.
The entire book is poetic and according to the NIV notes, it is the only book in the Old Testament that consists solely of laments. "A large number of the Psalms are lament poems and every prophetic book except Haggai includes one or more examples of lament genre," the notes state.

No one knows for certain who wrote the book. However, Jewish and Christian tradition is the book was written by the prophet Jeremiah. Some scholars, however, strongly dispute this belief.

The lament in the first verse of the first chapter is in regards to Jerusalem and its dreadful fate, according to Scripture.
2. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to answer this question: According to Genesis 2:7, what did God create from the dust of the ground?

Answer: man

The correct answer is man. The man's name, of course was Adam and his wife's name was Eve. Genesis 2:7, in the NIV Bible, states: "Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
3. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to answer this question: Who was the grandmother of Timothy, a young worker in the early church? (2 Timothy 1:5)

Answer: Lois

'Lois' is the correct answer. However, little is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference.

In 2 Timothy 1:3-5, the apostle Paul, in the NKJV Bible, writes to Timothy: "I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also."
4. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to answer this question: What's the name of the elderly prophetess in Luke 2:36-38 who expressed joy when a young Jesus was presented at the temple? (Hint: Her name is a palindrome. In other words, it's spelled the same frontwards and backwards.)

Answer: Anna

The correct answer is 'Anna'. However, not much is known about her as she is mentioned in only these three verses. Scripture states Anna was the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, and she was a "widow of about 84 years." It's also known she was extremely devout as she "did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day." According to verse 38, after Anna saw the infant Jesus "she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."
5. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to fill in the missing word from Exodus 40:34 in the NIV Bible: "Then the cloud covered the _____ of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle."

Answer: Tent

The correct answer is 'Tent'. The KJV uses the term 'tent of the congregation' while the NKV uses the term 'tabernacle of the meeting'.

Notes in the NIV Study Bible state Exodus 40:34 is a watershed event for the Israelites: "With the glory of Lord entering the tabernacle, the great series of events that started with the birth of Moses and his rescue from the Nile, foreshadowing the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, comes to a grand climax. From now on, the Israelites march through the desert, and through history with the Lord tenting among them and leading them to the land of fulfilled promises."
6. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to fill in the missing word from 2 Samuel 4:4 in the NIV Bible: "Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was ______ in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became disabled. His name was Mephibosheth."

Answer: lame

Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul and Scripture reports he was "lame in both feet." To be physically handicapped in Biblical times was almost akin to receiving a death sentence as, unlike today, there were no agencies to provide assistance.

A person in such circumstances would have to fend for himself. David and Mephibosheth's father were the best of friends. This, even though Jonathan's father Saul devoted much of his latter life trying to kill David. 2 Samuel 9:7 states that David restored to Mephibosheth all the land that belonged to his grandfather Saul and he ensured he would "always dine at his table with him."
7. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to answer this question: In Psalm 106:16 in the NKJV Bible, what five-letter word is used to describe Aaron, the brother of Moses?

Answer: saint

Aaron is described as a saint in Psalm 106:16 in both the KJV and the NKJV. (However, in the NIV the passage describes Aaron as being "consecrated to the LORD.")

The chapter recalls the tribulations of the Israelites in the wilderness. The passage in regards to Aaron makes mention of the LORD dealing with the rebellion of Dathan and Abiram which is reported in Numbers 16.
8. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to fill in the missing word from Psalm 71:16 in the NKJV: "I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD; I will make _______ of Your righteousness, of Yours only."

Answer: mention

The correct word is 'mention'. Many of the Psalms are believed to have been written by King David. Psalm 71 is largely about God being the Rock of Salvation.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say: "Psalm 71 is a psalm of lament with a major focus on the psalmist's trust in God. The psalm alternates between expressions of desperate need and resolute trust in the Lord."
9. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to fill in the missing word from John 20:31 in the NKJV: "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His ______."

Answer: name

The correct word is 'name'. The verse in question is one of the cornerstones of the evangelical Christian movement.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible has this to say about the verse: "John states the purpose for his book. His purpose was to convince his readers that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah who fulfilled God's promise to Israel. Jesus is the Son of God, God in the flesh. By believing these things, a person obtains eternal life."
10. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to fill in the missing word from Isaiah 29:6, in the NIV Bible: "The LORD Almighty will come with thunder and earthquake and great ______, with windstorm and tempest and flames of a devouring fire."

Answer: noise

The correct word is 'noise'. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about the verse: "The Lord's coming to His people is described using the imagery of the elements that accompanied Him at Sinai (Exodus 19:16-19) and when He fought for Israel (Judges 5:4, Psalm 18:7-15, Habakkuk 3:23-7.)"
