College Frosh Year, What I've Learned Quiz

These are some questions that cover the variety of topics I have thus been exposed to in my freshman year of college at Oregon State. I am currently a Forest Engineering and Civil Engineering Double Major. Enjoy!

Question 1 of 10
1. FE 101: Intro to Forest Engineering: A common forest engineering problem involves stream culverts, usually using corrugated PVC piping. To determine stream flow, you use various measurements including depth, length, width, cross sectional area, etc. Which of these coefficients is used to determine friction due to corrugation? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. CE 101: Intro to Civil Engineering: Which of these would a civil engineer NOT deal with? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. MTH 112: Trigonometry: How many radians to one cycle of the cosine curve? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. CSS 205: Soils Sustainability: When composting, starting your pile with "green," or grasses, and "brown," or feedstock or woody materials(leaves, twigs), is essential. The "green" offers nitrogen, while the "brown" offers carbon. Which ratio of brown to green is best for composting? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. CH 202: Chemistry for Engineers: Using the concentrations of various acids and bases in a reaction, along with the known Kc constant; we use these to solve for number of moles after reaction. Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. FE 102: Problem Solving and Technology: Using this program, it is possible to create formulas within Excel associating depicted variables. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. MTH 251: Differential Calculus: What is the derivative of the function f(x) = 3x^3 + 13x^2 + 5x - 12 ? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. PH 211: General Physics: Newton's Laws of Motion were an expansion to whose original laws of motion, based off of observation and logic? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. FOR 141: Tree Identification: What distinct feature on the Douglas-fir cone makes it easy to identify? Hint

Question 10 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Manning's

Manning's roughness coefficient is typically given by the manufacturer of the corrugated piping. If the slope of the pipe is steep, corrugation offers a slower flow for fish to swim through.
2. CE 101: Intro to Civil Engineering: Which of these would a civil engineer NOT deal with?

Answer: Crowd control

Obviously, structures are built by engineers, especially civil engineers. Another rising hazard is water pollution, and engineers are beginning to stress the need for the least amount of natural pollution.
3. MTH 112: Trigonometry: How many radians to one cycle of the cosine curve?

Answer: 2pi

One cycle starts at (1,0) and takes 360 degrees or 2pi radians for one complete cycle.

Answer: 2:1

For optimal composting, one part nitrogen to two parts carbon is best. Bacteria and fungi that decompose the materials work best with a high nitrogen environment, however, not too strong, otherwise the compost will take too long to decompose.
5. CH 202: Chemistry for Engineers: Using the concentrations of various acids and bases in a reaction, along with the known Kc constant; we use these to solve for number of moles after reaction.

Answer: ICE tables

ICE tables: Initial number of moles, Change in moles, End number of moles.
6. FE 102: Problem Solving and Technology: Using this program, it is possible to create formulas within Excel associating depicted variables.

Answer: VBA

Visual Basic is a programming language in which you can manipulate cells in Excel and create your own formulas calling on different variables with assigned letters.
7. MTH 251: Differential Calculus: What is the derivative of the function f(x) = 3x^3 + 13x^2 + 5x - 12 ?

Answer: 9x^2 + 26x + 5

The derivative is n(x)^(n-1). That is to say, the derivative is a coefficient equal to the exponent of the variable, times the variable, raised to a power of the original exponent minus one.
8. PH 211: General Physics: Newton's Laws of Motion were an expansion to whose original laws of motion, based off of observation and logic?

Answer: Aristotle

Aristotle said that an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by another force. Newton added a "part B" saying that an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by another force. This is an example of inertia.
9. FOR 141: Tree Identification: What distinct feature on the Douglas-fir cone makes it easy to identify?

Answer: The bracts on the cone scales.

The bracts on the scales of the cones look like chipmunks trying to hide.
10. CSS 205: Introduction to Soils: Which is a mixture of all soil types?

Answer: Loam

Thanks for playing. Hope it wasn't too difficult, and I hope you learned a little bit of useless trivia as a result. ;)
