Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all know that sunshine and fresh air are essential to good health. But when do we cross the line from healthy to dangerous? The sun, for instance, gives off energy in the form of radiation. We can see the sunlight, but we cannot see or feel the sun's UV rays. Which of the following does excessive exposure to UV rays cause?

Answer: all of these

Overexposure can also lead to freckles, rash problems and increased risk of developing skin cancers! BEWARE!
2. Of the sun's three UV ray types, UVA, UVB and UVC, which one is NOT absorbed at all by the ozone layer?

Answer: UVA

UVB rays are partially absorbed by the ozone layer and are potentially dangerous. UVC radiation is extremely hazardous to the skin but its rays are completely absorbed by the ozone layer and do not reach the surface of the earth. Thank goodness!
3. ______ rays are short, powerful rays that affect the outer layers of the skin. They cause sunburn and produce melanin, which is what gives people a tan. They also damage DNA in the skin, which can lead to skin cancer. Fill in the blank.

Answer: UVB

UVA rays are longer rays that penetrate deeper into the skin. These rays can pass through window glass (UVB rays do not). UVA rays cause wrinkling, sagging of the skin and premature aging. These rays are also thought to be connected with an increased risk in skin cancer!
4. UV light is an essential element in the formation of which vitamin?

Answer: Vitamin D

Although exposure to sunlight and/or tanning beds is generally bad for you, the formation of vitamin D is aided by sunlight. As little as ten minutes a day will be sufficient.
5. Which of the following factors can lead to UV rays being even more harmful?

Answer: all listed

Harmful effects are also increased by wind, reflections from water, sand and snow....things that we might not normally think to take into account!
6. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, what percentage of skin damage occurs BEFORE the age of 18?

Answer: 80 percent

Children have thinner skin than adults and are more sensitive to UV rays. One or two blistering sunburns in childhood can significantly increase a persons chance of developing skin cancer later in life!
7. Sunscreens work by absorbing, reflecting and scattering the suns UV rays on the skin. Most dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with a SPF (sun protection factor) of at LEAST what number?

Answer: SPF 15

They also suggest using a "broad spectrum" sunscreen which helps block out both UVA and UVB rays. You should apply sunscreen at least 15-20 minutes before going out into the sun. Apply liberally, and reapply every 2 hours--more often than that if you have been swimming or sweating excessively.
8. According to statistics from the American Academy of Dermatologists, how many Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime?

Answer: 1 in 5

Those odds are scary! The Canadian Cancer Society says that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and the most preventable! Is that nice tan really worth it?
9. Malignant Melanoma. The term strikes fear in the heart of anyone who hears it. And well it should! Melanoma can strike anyone--even children. The American Academy of Dermatology cites that one person each hour dies from melanoma and that in 2002, about 87,900 NEW cases of the cancer will be diagnosed in the US alone! What percentage of all skin cancer deaths are attributed to melanoma?

Answer: more than 80 percent

People at increased risk of developing a melanoma may have many moles and are usually Caucasian with fair skin. Redheads and blonds are 2-4 times at greater risk. If you have already had one melanoma or have a history of it in the family, your risk increases significantly!
10. In spite of all the dangers cited about over-exposure to the sun, some people are still going to continue to sun bathe! One last question. You have been out in the sun all day. You have come in for the night and notice that you have quite a sunburn. You are really uncomfortable! Your skin is blistered, you have a headache, chills and a fever and are sick to your stomach. Should you seek medical attention?

Answer: Yes

Chances are you have a second degree burn and possibly heat stroke. Remember that sometimes you may not see the effects of overexposure to the sun right away. It may take up to 24 hours before the full damage is visible! Please, please be careful! I've seen pictures on the walls of the hallways at work of people with malignant melanoma! Young people....people who thought that they were too young to get skin cancer! They were wrong and they paid the ultimate price for their beautiful tan!
