Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John has a lifelong history of getting into trouble. He lies, steals, gets into fights, and takes recreational drugs for fun. He never seems to learn from his mistakes and shows no remorse for hurting those around him. Which of the following personality disorders best describes John's presentation?

Answer: Antisocial

Antisocial personality disorder is associated with a chronic history of violating the rights of others and delinquent behavior. This diagnosis was originally developed as a behavioral conceptualization of the concept of psychopathy, a syndrome first identified in criminals. Currently, the two are considered overlapping yet distinct concepts, as the diagnostic criteria for each are not exactly the same.
2. Gina has always had offbeat interests, such as unseen energies that might affect human health. She sometimes thinks that she can read minds, and occasionally worries that aliens might be interfering with life on earth. People find that she never seems completely at ease around them even though she tries to be polite. Which of the following disorders best describes Gina's profile?

Answer: Schizotypal

Schizotypal personality disorder is characterized by unusual ideas and experiences that are not generally considered normal in one's culture, along with persistent discomfort with other people, even those one knows well. Some psychiatrists think that this disorder is an attenuated form of schizophrenia because the symptoms are similar in nature (e.g. experiencing and/or believing things that are not real) although they tend to be less severe.
3. Belinda loves being the center of attention and is the life of the party. She often treats people she has just met as if they are old friends but soon grows bored and ends up treating them with indifference. She is prone to making fantastic promises that she never keeps, and frequently flirts provocatively with her friends' boyfriends even though she has no real interest in them, and her friends resent it. Which of the following personality disorders is most likely to fit Belinda's presentation?

Answer: Histrionic

Histrionic personality disorder is associated with attention-seeking, dramatic and superficial emotional displays, and inappropriate seductive behavior. The word histrionic comes from a Greek word for actor, and people with this condition often seem like they are acting a part, as they tend to have exaggerated, theatrical responses to events.

They readily become flustered if they are not the center of attention.
4. Wanda is very unpredictable and her moods change without warning. When people first meet her, she can seem very exciting, but as they get to know her, she becomes very needy and manipulative. Sometimes she calls people in the early hours of the morning threatening to harm herself and accuses them of abandoning her. Which of the following best fits Wanda's description?

Answer: Borderline

Borderline personality disorder is associated with instability in one's sense of self, emotions, and relationships, as well as self-destructive behavior. People with this condition may alternate between idealizing and denigrating those they are close to, and have a deep fear of abandonment. They can be impulsive and reckless, as they have great difficulty controlling their emotions.
5. Conner works in the back-room of an office, where he rarely interacts with people. He prefers this, as he has always been a loner. He shows no interest in making friends or in dating. When questioned he usually gives very brief answers and rarely shows any emotion. Which of the following disorders best describes Conner's profile?

Answer: Schizoid

People with schizoid personality disorder are generally uninterested in human relationships and usually have no interest in forming sexual or romantic attachments. Although they tend not to be distressed by this, they may suffer problems in living such as homelessness and difficulty finding employment because of their social isolation.

They also tend to present as emotionally unresponsive. Both schizoid and schizotypal personality disorder are sometimes referred to as "schizophrenia-spectrum disorders" because of their similarities to features of schizophrenia.

However, a schizoid presentation differs from schizotypal personality disorder in that the former is not associated with psychotic-type symptoms such as odd beliefs and experiences.
6. Marina has always felt that she is a very special person who will achieve great things, thinks that she deserves better treatment than other people, and gets angry when others do not recognize her unique talents. Occasionally she gets depressed because she does not receive the admiration she thinks she deserves. Which personality disorder best describes Marina's presentation?

Answer: Narcissistic

Narcissistic personality disorder is associated with feelings of grandiosity (a belief in one's specialness, superiority, and importance) and of entitlement (a belief that one deserves better treatment than others), and is often accompanied by fantasies of achieving wealth, power, and admiration. People with this disorder sometimes become depressed when real life fails to live up to their ego-inflated expectations.

In general though, they don't see themselves as having a problem, as it is always other people who are the problem for failing to recognize how wonderful they are.
7. Claude feels lonely but is very shy when meeting new people because he worries that they might not like him. A woman at work has made friendly overtures to him, but he is reluctant to ask her out in case they get close and then she rejects him because of his personal inadequacies. Which personality disorder best describes Claude's symptom profile?

Answer: Avoidant

People with avoidant personality disorder have an intense fear of rejection, low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy. Unlike people with schizoid personality disorder, they have a strong need for close relationships, but have difficulty forming and maintaining them due to their intense shyness and feelings of inadequacy.
8. Debra is very unsure of herself and does not like making her own decisions. As a teenager, she relied on her parents to arrange social events for her and even married her husband based on their suggestion that he would be a good match rather than her own romantic feelings. In her marriage, she goes along with whatever her husband wants, even when it is not to her liking. Which of the following best describes Debra's personality disorder?

Answer: Dependent

Dependent personality disorder is characterized by excessive reliance on others for support, difficulty making decisions, and a profound need to be taken care of based on feelings of inability to cope by oneself. People with this condition tend to be overly submissive as a way to maintain the approval of other people who they rely on to meet their needs.
9. Edward is easily angered, as he reacts to unintentional slights, e.g. a stranger bumping into him, as deliberate provocations. He is very suspicious by nature and is convinced that most people he meets are deliberately trying to harm him in some way. He suspects that the government may be spying on him, although he is not sure why this would be the case. Which personality disorder best describes Edward's symptom profile?

Answer: Paranoid

People with paranoid personality disorder are naturally very suspicious and hostile. They tend to interpret ordinary setbacks (e.g. being stuck in traffic) as deliberate attempts to harm and frustrate them and are preoccupied with ideas of being persecuted. Paranoid personality disorder has a family resemblance to paranoid schizophrenia, although in the former, frank psychotic symptoms, such as hearing voices, are usually absent.
10. Gary likes to keep his desk at work tidy and well-organized. In fact, some days he spends more time straightening up his desk and organizing his filing cabinet than getting actual work done. When starting new projects, he spends too much time focusing on minor details and making lists, and falls behind in getting started. He is reluctant to throw old and worn-out things away, because "he might need them someday," and his house is cluttered with useless items. Which of the following personality disorders best describes Gary's symptom profile?

Answer: Obsessive-compulsive

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is associated with a preoccupation with orderliness, rules, and perfectionism. People with this condition may be become overly focused on the superficial details of an activity and may be so preoccupied with rules, lists, and schedules that the major point of what they are doing is lost.

They tend to be overly rigid in their behavior and often hang on to useless or worn-out items even if they have no sentimental value. This personality disorder is distinct from obsessive-compulsive disorder in that in the latter condition, the person's obsessions and compulsions are resisted and are a source of significant distress. Those with the personality disorder on the other hand, usually think that there is value in their behavior, i.e. they think that following rules and routines is a good thing and may not see it as irrational.
