Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which quarterback from Louisiana Tech was taken first overall in the 1970 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Answer: Terry Bradshaw

Bradshaw spent his entire career wearing the number 12 with the Steelers for 14 seasons. He led the Steelers to four Super Bowl wins, threw 11 yards shy of a career 28,000 yards, then retired in 1983. He later became a sports analyst.
2. In 1971, the New England Patriots selected a Stanford quarterback number one overall. He went on to pass for over 25,000 yards in his career. Who was it?

Answer: Jim Plunkett

Plunkett played five seasons with the Patriots, and was second in the league in passing in 1973. He joined the 49ers in 1976 for two seasons before spending his final eight seasons as a Raider. As a Raider, he led the team to two Super Bowl titles against the Eagles and Redskins. Quarterback Archie Manning went second in that 1971 NFL draft.
3. The Buffalo Bills ended up with lemons in 1972 when they drafted which defensive end number overall from Notre Dame?

Answer: Walt Patulski

The other defensive ends were taken way back in round 11. Patulski lasted only five seasons in the NFL, four with the Bills and one with the Cardinals. He retired in 1977.
4. The Houston Oilers didn't fully realize who they had in their 1973 number one overall pick. They let this defensive end go after the first season, then he later made a name for himself with the Oakland Raiders. Who was it?

Answer: John Matuszak

The others were all running backs taken in the same draft, and not by Houston. Matuszak played for the Chiefs for two seasons after the Oilers, then spent the rest of his career in Oakland. John died in 1989.
5. The number one pick in the 1974 NFL draft went to the Dallas Cowboys, who picked which defensive end?

Answer: Ed Jones

'Too Tall' as he was nicknamed, was drafted from Tennessee State and spent his entire 16 seasons with the Cowboys. Jones was a three-time Pro Bowler in 1981, '82, and '83. The Cowboys also selected running back Charley Young in the first round of that draft.
6. The NFL draft in 1975 saw the great Walter Payton picked number four overall. Even Cowboy Randy White who went second in the draft, was overshadowed by the Atlanta Falcons number one pick. Which quarterback did they select?

Answer: Steve Bartkowski

11 of his 12 seasons were with the Falcons. His final season in 1986 was as a Ram. Steve made it to the Pro Bowl in 1980 and 1981 for his arm of 3544 and 3829 yards, respectively. He threw for 156 touchdowns, and had another 11 on the ground. In this strange 1975 draft, quarterback Steve Grogan was picked by New England 116th overall.
7. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected which defensive end from Oklahoma in the 1976 draft, number one overall?

Answer: Lee Roy Selmon

The others were all running backs that were taken in the 10th round. Selmon was the first draft pick ever for the Bucs, and it was a good one. Lee Roy played his entire nine-season career in Tampa Bay and made the Pro Bowl six times. Selmon was later inducted into the Hall of Fame.
8. For the Buccaneers dismal season in 1976, they earned the first pick in 1977. Although they passed up on Tony Dorsett, which USC running back did they take?

Answer: Ricky Bell

The others were all defensive tackles. Bell was drafted ahead of Cowboy Tony Dorsett who went number two. Ricky played five of his six injury-riddled seasons with the Buccaneers. His greatest season was 1979 when he rushed for 1263 yards.
9. 1978 saw a running back selected first by the Houston Oilers. He ran for over 1000 yards in a season five times. Who was this pick from Texas?

Answer: Earl Campbell

In his nine seasons, Campbell made five Pro Bowl appearances. Earl never had a receiving touchdown, but had 74 on the ground. He also played with the Saints.
10. The Buffalo Bills had two top five picks in the 1979 draft. Which linebacker from Ohio State did they take first overall?

Answer: Tom Cousineau

In a draft that saw Kellen Winslow picked 13th overall, the Bills never saw Cousineau in a Buffalo uniform. Tom strongly felt that the Bills' front office was too rude to him, so he played in Canada with the Montreal Alouettes. The Bills traded him for a 1983 draft pick, and Tom played for the Cleveland Browns and 49ers in the NFL from 1982-1987.
