Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1890, a new league was formed in hopes of competing against the always powerful and in-place National League. Which league was this that folded at the end of one season?

Answer: Players League

The Players League debuted in 1890 with eight teams. Those teams in order of finish were the Boston Reds, Brooklyn Ward's Wonderers, New York Giants, Chicago Pirates, Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburgh Burghers, Cleveland Infants, and the Buffalo Bisons who finished 46.5 games out of first place. The Players League was not able to build any revenues, and folded after the season.
2. Fans in 1891 the saw the American Association League come to an unfortunate end after 10 seasons. The Boston Reds who played in a different league the previous season, came in and took the final pennant for the league. In the National League, this future Hall of Fame New York Giant pitcher was the youngest pitcher ever to throw a no-hitter at the age of 20. Which pitcher was this?

Answer: Amos Rusie

Rusie pitched eight of his 10 seasons as a Giant from 1890-1898. His best season was in 1894 when he went 36-13. His 1891 no-hitter was against Brooklyn in a 6-0 win during July. Amos was inducted into the hall in 1977.
3. This National League Baltimore Oriole catcher set a baseball record in game in 1892 that would last for decades to come. He had seven hits in seven at-bats with six singles and a double, having 11 RBIs. He would retire in 1902, but later made a name for himself as the manager of the Brooklyn Robins (later Dodgers) from 1914-1931. Who is this Hall of Famer?

Answer: Wilbert Robinson

The Brooklyn team was named Robins after Robinson. "Uncle Robbie" as he was called, took the Robins to two NL pennants in 1916 and 1920. The Hall of Fame inducted him in 1945.
4. With 12 teams in the National League, this team in 1893 would win their third straight National League pennant, and go on to win five in the decade. They were led by outfielders Hugh Duffy and Tommy McCarthy, and pitchers Kid Nichols and Jack Stivetts. The team would change their "Beaneater" team name in 1906. Who did this team eventually become late in the 20th century?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

With a road record of 37-28 in 1893, the Beaneaters were the only team to win even 30 games on the road. The Baltimore Orioles won three pennants in the decade, and Brooklyn won the other two. Boston dumped the Beaneater name in 1907 to become the Boston Doves. With many more name changes to come, they became the Atlanta Braves in 1966.
5. While Thomas Edison was creating the first movie studio in 1894, this National League team was making their own history by setting one of those records that will most likely never come close to being touched. Each of their three outfielders had over a .400 batting average during the season. Ed Delahanty batted .404, Billy Hamilton .403, and Sam Thompson batted .415. Which team had this more than batting outfield?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies had a reserve outfielder who played in 82 games in the name of Tuck Turner. He batted .418 in 1894 also. Of the 10 players in the 1890s who batted over .400, the Phillies owned more than half the list. Somehow, the Phillies would still finish in fourth place in the 1894 season.
6. The Cleveland Spiders and future Hall of Fame great Cy Young showed up in Chicago to play the National League Chicago Colts (later Cubs) in a game in 1895. However, the Colts didn't show up to play. Where was entire team?

Answer: In jail

The entire team was arrested for inciting a riot against a group formed by Reverend W.W. Clark. Clark's group was one of many who did not want baseball to be played on Sundays. The game later took place after the Colts' owner posted bail for the entire team. The Colts beat the Spiders 13-4 in the rescheduled game.
7. This future Hall of Fame great was born in Texas in 1896, and is on the top 10 list of many who regard him as one of the greatest baseball players in history. The second baseman would play most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, win two National League MVPs, batted for the Triple Crown twice, and led the league in batting seven times. Who is this Hall of Famer?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Hornsby played from 1915-1937. He spent 18 seasons in St. Louis, 13 with the NL Cardinals and five with the AL Browns. Rogers won his first MVP in 1925 with the Cardinals, then with the Cubs where he won his second NL MVP in 1929. Rogers was an easy induction into the hall in 1942.
8. Which player became the first in National League history in 1897 to reach an incredible milestone of getting his 3000th hit, solely in the NL?

Answer: Cap Anson

Anson was in his final season of 27 in 1897 when he reached number 3000 in the National League. He began it all in 1871 in the National Association with the Rockford Forest Citys. He played five seasons there before joining the National League in 1876. Strangely enough, he led the league only one time in hits, and that was with the Chicago White Stockings of the NL in 1881.

His historical NL hit came on June 18. Overall with the two leagues combined, Anson retired with 3435 career hits.
9. On April 16, 1898, which team saw many of their fans injured during a fire that destroyed the stands in left field?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

The other teams did not exist by name in that season. The Browns were hosting the Chicago Orphans (later Cubs) at Sportsman Park and saw an attendance of 4000 fans. More than 100 fans were injured in the fire and blamed on a lit cigar. The entire left field section, bleachers and stands were gone in 20 minutes.

The smoker was never identified, but the Browns choked on the smoke, finishing the season in last place with a 39-111 record, 63.5 games out of first place behind the Boston Beaneaters (later Braves) in the season.
10. Which 1899 National League team set a record, one likely never to be broken, by losing 134 games in the season?

Answer: Cleveland Spiders

The Spiders franchise began in 1890, and were an above average team with Cy Young on the mound in the past. The 1899 team has been tagged with being the worst-ever in baseball. The owner of the Spiders sold virtually all his star players to the other franchise that he owned in St. Louis.

This left the Spiders with no-names who lasted only one or two seasons in baseball, or players who were way past their prime.
