Answer: Uruguay

Uruguay hosted the inaugural FIFA World Cup. A mere three stadiums were used: Estadio Centenario, Estadio Pocitos and Estadio Parque Central, all three were in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo (Estadio Pocitos has now been demolished but the other two remain).

The FIFA World Cup has yet to be held in Oceania, let alone Australia itself. England would not host the FIFA World Cup until 1966, and Brazil didn't until 1950.

These two South American footballing giants battled it out in the final after Uruguay defeated Yugoslavia in one semi-final, and Argentina defeated USA in the other. Both semi-finals finished 6-1. England were not a part of FIFA at the time, and therefore were not eligible to take part. Belgium were eliminated in the group stage, losing both their games. Brazil did not make it past the group stage either, finishing second of three teams in Group 2.

Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final. Pablo Dorado gave the hosts the lead after 12 minutes, but in the 20th minute, Carlos Peucelle equalised for Argentina. Guillermo Stabile gave the eventual runners-up the lead in the 37th minute, but 3 goals coming from Pedro Cea, Santos Iriarte and Hector Castro, coming respectively in the 57th, 68th and 89th minutes. Yugoslavia lost 1-6 to Uruguay at the semi-final stage, the USA lost to Argentina in the other semi, and Brazil did not make it past the group stage.

Carlos Peucelle was also Argentinian and he finished the tournament with 3 goals: 2 in their semi-final match and 1 in the final. American Jim Brown scored just 1, and that was USA's only goal in their crushing semi-final defeat at the hands of Argentina. Yugoslavia's Ivan Bek scored 3 goals: one in the 2-1 victory over Brazil in the group stage and two against Bolivia in the group stage.

There was some dispute as to whether Bert Patenaude scored a hat-trick or not on July 17th in a 3-0 Group Stage win over Paraguay (some sources credited one of the goals as an own goal by Aurelio Gonzalez). Patenaude's milestone was officially recognised by FIFA as the first hat-trick in World Cup history on 10th November 2006, 76 years later, when Florie's goal was re-attributed to Patenaude. FIFA cited 'evidence from various historians and football fans, as well as lengthy research and confirmation from the US Soccer Federation.
