This game was South Africa's first ever World Cup final, and NZ's second. South Africa won the game 15-12.

They lost to South Africa in the first game of the World Cup 27-18, and then to England in the 1/4 finals 25-22. Prior to this they had only lost two games in the previous two World Cups.
