Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team was first on the 2006 AFL ladder after 22 rounds?

Answer: West Coast Eagles

West Coast continued their dominance in the regular season, recording 68 points. Adelaide followed on 64 points in 2nd, Fremantle surprisingly coming 3rd on 60, with the Swans in equal 4th with Collingwood and St Kilda on 56.
2. Which player won the 2006 NAB Rising Star award?

Answer: Danyle Pearce

Danyle Pearce, the Aboriginal speedster from Port Adelaide helped keep his side afloat in an otherwise disappointing season in which they focused on building a pool of young players who will contribute to success in the years to come. Pearce was destined to be a superstar himself.
3. Which two teams played the opening game of season 2006?

Answer: West Coast and St Kilda

The match played on Thursday 30th March at Subiaco Oval, opened proceedings for season 2006 with West Coast starting their dominance of 2006 early by beating St Kilda in an exciting match.
4. Who was the only coach to be sacked in 2006?

Answer: Grant Thomas

The sacking of Grant Thomas came to the surprise of many who believed many other coaches should fall before him. St Kilda's defeat in the elimination final in the first week of the finals was the final straw for the St Kilda board after many years in which the team had arguably the best side on paper but couldn't win a premiership despite their favouritism with the bookmakers. Ross Lyon, the Sydney assistant coach took over as coach of St Kilda.
5. Jason Akermanis left Brisbane at seasons end to join which AFL club?

Answer: Western Bulldogs

Akermanis was prompted to find a new environment after his well-documented fallout with coach Leigh Matthews. Throughout the season he was dropped for poor disclipine and poor form and this led to Akermanis showing his dismay in all forms of the media.
6. Which player despite winning the most possessions throughout the season, was denied the Brownlow Medal?

Answer: Scott West

Poor Scott West amassed a total of 708 possessions, but this wasn't enough to gain enough votes off the umpires. He came second to the eventual winner, Adam Goodes, who won his second Brownlow Medal.
7. Who won the 2006 NAB preseason cup?

Answer: Geelong

After Carlton's win in 2005, winning the preseason cup seems to be a curse for teams. Geelong after defeating Adelaide in the final, struggled throughout 2006 with poor form and consistency seeing them finishing in 10th position. This forced a well-publicised review of the club and sacking of several senior officials.
8. Sydney Swans and West Coast played two times in the 2006 Final Series. The difference in both those matches were a total of two points.

Answer: True

It is amazing to believe the history these two teams have. Many of the matches have been decided by less than 10 points, showing how tightly matched they are. In the qualifying final Sydney defeated West Coast away from home 85-84, however the Eagles won the Grand Final the same margin with score being, 85-84.
9. Who won the Coleman Medal in 2006?

Answer: Brendan Fevola

Despite Carlton copping the wooden spoon for the second straight year, Fevola shone on the field kicking 84 goals. His hard leads, strong marking and long kicking gave him the well-rounded game a full-forward needs to kick a large amount of goals.
10. Who were the three umpires who officiated in the 2006 Grand Final?

Answer: Brett Allen, Darren Goldspink, Michael Vozzo

The Grand Final was Michael Vozzo's first. He was lucky to be alongside veterans Brett Allen and Darren Goldspink. It was Allen's fifth consecutive Grand Final, his seventh overall, while Goldspink was involved in his sixth premiership decider since 1993. Allen is now within sight of the record of seven consecutive VFL / AFL grand held by Bob Scott, who controlled Grand Finals from 1929 to 1935. Jack Elder set a GF record for field umpires with 10.
