Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This team had the biggest increase in their win total from 2007 to 2008.

Answer: Miami Dolphins

Miami turned their team around and improved from 1-15 to 11-5 (10 wins) and made the playoffs. Atlanta went from 4-12 to 11-5 (7 wins). Baltimore went from 5-11 to 11-5 (6 wins). New York Jets improved from 4-12 to 9-7 (5 wins).
2. This player led the league in interceptions thrown with 22.

Answer: Brett Favre

Favre was in the news for most of 2008. He retired and then un-retired. He then got traded to the New York Jets and had a good statistical start to the season, but in the final 5 games of the regular season, he threw 9 interceptions and only 2 touchdowns. Cutler was next closest with 18 interceptions. Frerotte had 15 interceptions. Orton had 12 interceptions.
3. Which was the only NFL team to go undefeated in the 2008 preseason?

Answer: Detroit Lions

The Lions were the only team to go undefeated with a 4-0 record in the preseason. They followed that by going 0-16 in the regular season, showing that the preseason is a very poor predictor of what will happen in the regular season. The Patriots on the other hand went 0-4 in the preseason. The Titans and Jets went an equally meaningless 3-1.
4. Which player led the league in rushing touchdowns?

Answer: DeAngelo Williams

DeAngelo Williams had a great ending to his season scoring 16 touchdowns in his last 9 games after only having 2 touchdowns in the first 7 games. He finished with 18 touchdowns. Turner finished second with 17 rushing touchdowns. Tomlinson had an off-year by his standards with 11 rushing touchdowns. Peterson led the league in rushing yards with 1760, but had only 10 rushing touchdowns. Peterson also led the league in fumbles with 9.
5. Which player led the league in receptions and receiving yards?

Answer: Andre Johnson

Johnson had 115 receptions and 1575 receiving yards. Johnson's team, the Houston Texans finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. Fitzgerald had 96 and 1431. Smith had 78 and 1421. Welker had 111 and 1165.
6. After an injury to the starting quarterback, this back-up came in and finished the season with 21 touchdowns and an 89.4 QB rating, but his team still missed the playoffs. Who was he?

Answer: Matt Cassel

Cassel had New England playing fairly well, considering they lost the 2007 MVP Tom Brady in the first week of the season. They finished 11-5 and still missed the playoffs. All of the other choices also had to fill in when their starter got hurt, but their teams did not do nearly as well.
7. This player led the league in total points scored. Who was it?

Answer: Stephen Gostkowski

As usual in the NFL, a kicker led the league in scoring. Gostkowski finished with 36 Field Goals and 40 PATs for a total of 148 points. Akers was second with 144 and Carney third with 143. Williams was the highest scoring non-kicker with 122 points.
8. Which team finished the season with the most points per game and yards per game?

Answer: New Orleans Saints

Proving that offense alone will get you nowhere, the Saints finished with 28.9 points per game and 410.7 yards per game and still missed the playoffs. The Chargers, Giants, and Cardinals all had great offenses in 2008 as well, and finished in that order behind the Saints in points per game.
9. This franchise, that has been around officially since 1898, made the playoffs for the first time since 1998, and hosted their first playoff game since 1947. Which team is this?

Answer: Arizona Cardinals

Originally founded in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago, the Arizona Cardinals would eventually become the Racine Cardinals, the Chicago Cardinals, the St. Louis Cardinals, and finally the Arizona Cardinals. They have posted a 2-5 postseason record in the modern NFL era.

They turned this season around with a great offense led by Kurt Warner. They also benefited from a very weak division where they finished with a 6-0 record (they were only 3-7 in their non-division games).
10. Which two teams had the most negative turnaround with 7 less wins in 2008 than in 2007?

Answer: Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers

Detroit Lions went from 7 to 0 wins. Packers went from 13 to 6. The Browns went from 10 to 4, Seahawks from 10 to 4, Jaguars from 11 to 5, and the Patriots from 16 to 11.
