The Finnish people were given two games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild, both games won by the Hurricanes. Next door in Sweden, the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks split their two games in the Swedish capital. In Prague, the Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes split their two game set in the Czech Republic.

The NHL Premiere of sending teams overseas to kick off a season began in 2007, and has grew since then.
2. The Edmonton Oilers hit the ice in 2010 with a new face. What player did the Oilers snag with the first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft?

Answer: Taylor Hall

Taylor Hall was the Oilers first overall selection in 2010. In his rookie season, Hall recorded 22 goals and 42 points in 65 games. His season came to an abrupt end on March 3, when he suffered a high ankle sprain in a fight with Columbus' Derek Dorsett. He didn't miss much as the Oilers suffered to a 30th place finish overall.
3. A scary moment happened in October, when what goalie collapsed on the ice during a game?

Answer: Ondrej Pavelec

Pavelec collapsed in front of his net while the play was going on at the other end. Pavelec left on a stretcher, unconscious, and taken to the hospital. By the time the game finished, Pavelec had regained consciousness and was concerned about the score of the game. Doctors claimed the reason of his collapse was neurocardiogenic syncope, a fainting spell, and he was released from hospital three days later.
4. The annual NHL Winter Classic outdoor game was held on New Years' Day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. What was odd about this game?

Answer: It was the first to be played at night

The game originally scheduled for 1:00 in the afternoon, but was pushed back after unseasonal temperatures brought in rain. The ice was cleared and the game was played that night. The Washington Capitals beat the hometown Penguins 3-1.
5. What NHL superstar sat out the second half of the season with a concussion, many assume to have been suffered in the NHL Winter Classic?

Answer: Sidney Crosby

Crosby was delivered a blindside hit from Capitals forward Dave Steckel at the end of the second period. The hit was not deemed intentional as Crosby was turning around to head back to the bench, and Steckel was gliding in slowly to get the puck. A few days later, Crosby was hit from behind by Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman. Crosby did not play the rest of the season.

In the 41 games Crosby played in, he recorded 66 points. Those 66 points still led his team in scoring at season's end.
6. For the first time in NHL history, the league staged two outdoor games on the season. The second game was played February 20 in what Western city?

Answer: Calgary

The Calgary Flames played the Montreal Canadians at Calgary's McMahon Stadium, home of the CFLs Stampeders. Calgary won the game 4-0 in front of over 41,000 cold fans. Rene Bourque scored two goals for Calgary, and Mikka Kiprusoff stopped all 37 shots for the shutout.
7. Which of these teams missed the postseason for a 10th consecutive season?

Answer: Florida Panthers

The Panthers missed the postseason and remained without a playoff appearance since the 1999-2000 season. The other three teams also missed the playoffs, Toronto's drought the longest of the three at six seasons.
8. Which of the Sedin twins led the league in scoring?

Answer: Daniel

Daniel recorded 41 goals and 63 assists (104 points) in the regular season to lead the league in scoring, and win the Art Ross Trophy for top scorer. Henrik scored 19 times, and added 75 assists (94 points) to finish fourth in league scoring. Martin St. Louis (99 points) and Corey Perry (98) were second and third respectively.
9. What event happened 14 times in the first round of the playoffs?

Answer: Overtime goal

Every series except Detroit/Phoenix saw a game go more than 60 minuutes. Three of the games needed double overtime. Both of the eventual cup finalists needed overtime in Game 7 of the first round of their series to advance. Overtime stuck 6 more times in Round 2, but only once in the conference finals.
10. The season concluded with the Vancouver Canucks raising the Stanley Cup.

Answer: False

The Boston Bruins beat the Canucks in Game 7 in Vancouver to lift the Stanley Cup. Tim Thomas won the Conn Smythe Award as playoff MVP, and Zdeno Chara lifted the Stanley Cup. An ugly scene broke out after the game outside of the arena, where mad fans staged a nasty riot, setting cars on fire, and damaging storefronts throughout the city.
