Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Ottawa player caused this rivarly to heat up by high-sticking two Flyers in the past two seasons?

Answer: Martin Havlat

Havlat high-sticked Kim Johnsson during the 2003 playoffs, then hit Mark Recchi in the face with his stick on February 26, 2004. The second stick to the face earned Havlat a two game suspension. Many Flyers, including coach Ken Hitchcock, were incensed at Havlat for these incidents, and one could only wonder what would happen in the next Senators-Flyers game.
2. How many times did the two teams fight in the first two periods?

Answer: 0

Surprisingly, no two players from either Ottawa or Philadelphia went at it in the first two periods, and not for most of the third period either. Still, one could assume that some fighting was inevitable.
3. Which Flyers tough guy started the fighting by shoving a Senator with 1:45 remaining in the third period?

Answer: Donald Brashear

Brashear shoved Rob Ray in front of the Flyers goal, setting off a fight between those two. This was no surprise whatsoever, as Brashear and Ray are the enforcers on Philly and Ottawa, respectively.
4. How many fights occurred during the initial brawl at 18:15 of the third period?

Answer: 4

Eight players fought at 18:15 of the third: Rob Ray vs Donald Brashear, Branko Radivojevic vs Shaun Van Allen, Danny Markov vs Todd Simpson, and Robert Esche vs Patrick Lalime.
5. Both starting goalies fought at 18:15.

Answer: True

The Sens' Patrick Lalime skated across the ice to meet up with Philly's Robert Esche, and they proceeded to fight. Both Lalime and Esche got 5 minute majors for fighting, 2 minute minors for leaving the crease, and game misconducts. Each team's backup goalies had to finish the game in net.
6. How many seconds of game time elapsed until the next set of fights began?

Answer: 3

Right after the ensuing faceoff, two more brawls occurred at 18:18 of the third: Radovan Somik vs Chris Neil, and Mattias Timander vs Zdeno Chara. Surprisingly of those four, only Chara received a game misconduct.
7. Which Senator started a battle just 0:03 after the second set of fighting?

Answer: Mike Fisher

Right after the faceoff at 18:21 of the third, Mike Fisher fought opposing center Michal Handzus, with both players receiving fighting majors, 10 minute misconducts, and game misconducts.
8. How many seconds ticked off of the game clock from the first fights at 18:15 to the fourth set of fights?

Answer: 30

Just 24 game seconds after the brawl between Handzus and Fisher, four more players duked it out on the ice at 18:45 of the third: Mark Recchi vs Brian Smolinski, and John LeClair vs Wade Redden. As one could expect, all four players got game misconducts.
9. Which two players from the Flyers and Senators, respectively, fought in the fifth and final set of fights?

Answer: Patrick Sharp and Jason Spezza

Sharp and Spezza held a punch-fest just two seconds after the fourth set of fights. Both players were ejected from the game, meaning they received game misconducts, at 18:47 of the third period.
10. Lost among all of the fighting, who won this game and by which score?

Answer: Flyers, 5-3

The Flyers won this game 5-3, paced by four unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 early. The score was 5-2 during all of the fighting, with Peter Bondra ripping home a relatively meaningless power play goal after all the fighting finally ended.
11. This game set an NHL record for most penalties in minutes (PIM) in a game.

Answer: True

The Flyers and Senators combined for 419 PIM, breaking the record of 406 set in 1981 in a matchup between the Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars.
12. Which team had more PIM, the Flyers or the Senators?

Answer: Flyers

The Flyers set an NHL record with 213 PIM, breaking the old record of 211 set by Minnesota. Ottawa came close, with it's players recording a total of 206 PIM.
13. How many fighting majors were given out in total?

Answer: 21

A total of 21 fighting majors were distributed among the Flyers and Senators. The odd number of majors is easily explained: Donald Brashear received a double fighting major for starting the whole melee.
14. Which of these players did NOT receive a double game misconduct?

Answer: Patrick Lalime

Somehow, Lalime did not get a double game misconduct, though his sparring partner Esche did. In all, four players received double game misconducts: Esche, Radivojevic, Van Allen, and Jason Spezza.
15. During the brawling action, where was the player who caused most of this bad blood hiding?

Answer: in the penalty box, serving a teammate's penalty

Martin Havlat, the main source of the recent bad blood, ironically was not involved in the fighting at all. He was in the penalty box, serving a Senator teammate's penalty from the initial fighting at 18:15.
