1. Which of these baseball greats never pitched in Major League Baseball?

Answer: Bill Dickey

Dickey was a Hall of Fame Yankee catcher of 17 seasons from 1928-1946. He was a runner-up MVP to Jimmie Foxx of the Red Sox in 1938. His number 8 was retired by the Yankees, along with another Hall of Fame Yankee, Yogi Berra. Johnson was a Hall of Fame pitcher for the Washington Senators. Gibson, another Hall of Famer was with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Another hall inductee, Feller, pitched for the Cleveland Indians.
2. Which of these baseball sluggers hit over 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays did it twice. Willie was with the Giants in 1955 when he hit 51 home runs. Mays hit 41 in 1951, and was awarded the NL MVP. In 1955, he finished fourth for the MVP behind Dodger Roy Campanella, Dodger Duke Snider, and the Cubs' Ernie Banks. He also hit 52 in 1965 and won another NL MVP Award also.
3. Which team went to eight World Series in the 1950s?

Answer: Yankees

The Yankees began the 1950s decade after a win against the Dodgers in 1949. From 1950-1953, they defeated the Phillies, Giants, and the the Dodgers twice. After missing the 1954 postseason, they then appeared in four more from 1955-1958, losing to the Dodgers, then defeating them, losing to the Braves, then defeating them. Eight appearances with six wins in the decade.
4. The Cincinnati Reds repeated as World Series champions in 1976. Johnny Bench led the team in 1975 by hitting 28 home runs. Who led the Reds in 1976 with the most home runs in that season?

Answer: George Foster

The others never played for the Cincinnati Reds. After Foster made a new season high with 29 in 1976, he exploded for 52 big ones in 1977, along with a career high of batting .320 in the season. He retired with 348 home runs over 18 seasons, with the White Sox in 1986.

The Reds won the World Series in 1975, four games to three over the Red Sox, then repeated in 1976 with a four games to none crown over the Yankees.
5. Gene Mauch set a record as a manager for never winning a league pennant in his 26 seasons at the helm. Which of these managers didn't win a league pennant either?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Mauch managed from 1960-1987, yet never took a flag. Robinson, after a Hall of Fame playing career, managed the Indians, Giants, Orioles, and Expos/Nationals from 1975-2006, and came up empty-handed each season. The others all won at least four league titles and at least one World Series.
6. Who was the only pitcher to win more than 25 games in a season during the 1990s?

Answer: Bob Welch

The others were all retired before 1990. Welch was an Oakland Athletic in 1990 when he threw a career high 27-6 in the season. He won the American League Cy Young Award for his efforts. He also helped the Athletics to a World Series appearance in the season, but lost to the Reds. John Smoltz of the Braves was the only other pitcher that came close to the 25-mark in the decade by winning 24 in 1996.
7. Yankee Yogi Berra was a rookie in the 1947 season, and appeared in his first World Series. Which number did he wear in the season?

Answer: 35

Famous for wearing the number 8, Yankee catcher Bill Dickey wore the number 8 in his final season in 1947. Berra then changed over from 35. The number 8 was retired by the Yankees in both the Hall of Famers' honor.
8. Which of these franchises took more than 20 seasons in their history, to finally win a World Series crown?

Answer: Dodgers

The others all won the World Series in less than 15 seasons of their inception. The White Sox began their endeavors in the American League in 1901, and won their first series crown in 1906 against the Cubs. The Red Sox franchise also began in 1901, and won their first World Series in 1912 against the New York Giants.

The Mets began as a dismal team in 1962, then won it all in 1969. The Dodger franchise began way back in 1884 as the Brooklyn Atlantics, and would not win a World Series until 1955.

The World Series began in 1903.
9. Which of these 21st century franchises did not change their name during the entire 20th century?

Answer: White Sox

The Red Sox were the Boston Americans from 1901-1907 before taking the Red Sox name. The Phillies entered the 20th century with the Phillies name, but changed it in 1943-1944 to the Blue Jays, before changing it back. The Dodger franchise entered the century under the name of Superbas, and kept waffling between that, the Robins, and the Dodgers, before keeping the Dodger name for good in 1932.

The White Sox and Tigers were the only two American League teams in 100 seasons of Major League Baseball, that played without changing identity.
10. Which of these Hall of Fame greats lived the longest after retiring from baseball?

Answer: Luke Appling

This wasn't close. Appling, the 20-season Hall of Famer for the White Sox, played his last game in 1950, and died 41 years later in 1991. Fox was another White Sox Hall of Fame great. His final game was in 1965, then died in 1975. Mathewson, the great New York Giants star, retired in 1916 and died only nine years later in 1925.

The Bambino retired as a Boston Brave in 1935, then lasted 13 years until 1948.
