Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the stadium the NFL used for its Pro Bowl many seasons, but during the regular season it was used by a college team called the Rainbow Warriors. What's the stadium?

Answer: Aloha Stadium in Honolulu

College's Hula Bowl and Aloha Bowl are also played in Aloha Stadium. The Pro Bowl has called the stadium home for over 25 seasons since 1980, and the University of Hawaii's Rainbow Warriors have played there since 1975. It seats 50,000.
2. This stadium on the shores of Lake Michigan has a 250-foot granite wall with sculptures of American servicemen and servicewomen. What's it called?

Answer: Soldier Field

The old Soldier Field was torn down at the end of the 2001 season, and the Chicago Bears had to play their home games in Champaign in 2002. The new stadium opened in 2003, and the first game played there was against bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers.
3. In 2009, naming rights to this stadium were purchased by Anheuser-Busch, and the place was named for a beer sold under Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" brand. What's the stadium?

Answer: Land Shark Stadium in Miami

The stadium was originally called Joe Robbie Stadium (named after the Dolphins' owner who built it), then Pro Player Park, then Pro Player Stadium, and then Dolphins Stadium. It hosted the Dolphins, the University of Miami Hurricanes, the Florida Marlins (of Major League Baseball), and the annual college Orange Bowl.
4. The largest crowd in college football history was 112,118 for a game at this stadium in 2003. Which facility is known as the 'Big House'?

Answer: Michigan Stadium

Michigan Stadium is #2 in the country in terms of capacity (Penn State's Beaver Stadium is slightly larger), and was built in 1927 and expanded several times since then. The game in 2003 (in which Michigan beat Ohio State 35-21) was the 100th game in the two schools' rivalry.
5. The first regular season NFL game that was played outside the USA was in 2005, and the Cardinals beat the 49ers 31-14. In which stadium was the game played?

Answer: Estadio Azteca in Mexico City

Over 103,000 fans watched the game live. It was the first game in the NFLs International Series, and was followed in subsequent years by three games in London (Giants/Dolphins in 2007, Chargers/Saints in 2008, and Patriots/Buccaneers in 2009).
6. Bronco Stadium, the home field of the Boise State football team, has an unusually colored playing surface. What is the nickname that the field is known by?

Answer: Smurf Turf

The turf in Bronco Stadium is a bright blue, making it the only football field in major college football that's not green (though the University of New Haven, a Division II school, also has blue field turf). In the 10 years from 1999 to 2009, the Broncos rolled up an amazing 71-2 home record.
7. This professional sports stadium is perhaps best known for housing some 30,000 refugees during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in 2005. What is it?

Answer: Louisiana Superdome

The storm peeled off some of the dome's outer covering, letting in rain and wind. The damage to the Superdome was so extensive that it wasn't opened back up for business until September of 2006.
8. This stadium, the longest continuously occupied playing venue in the NFL in 2009 (it's been around since 1957), was the host of 1967 'Ice Bowl', in which temperatures during the game were as low as 13°F (and with the wind chill was as low as −48°F). What is the name of this frozen tundra?

Answer: Lambeau Field

The home Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys in the Ice Bowl on Bart Starr's quarterback sneak with 16 seconds left in the game, thus taking their third straight NFL championship. The band from the nearby University of Wisconsin-La Crosse was scheduled to play, but during warm-ups, it was so cold that seven of the musicians had to go to the hospital for hypothermia.
9. From which football stadium can you see "Touchdown Jesus"?

Answer: Notre Dame Stadium

"Touchdown Jesus" is a gigantic mural on the side of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Library, and the fans in the stadium can see Jesus raising his arms as though signaling a Notre Dame score. They've had plenty of scores in their history.
10. This stadium has hosted the Olympics twice (in 1932 and 1984), two Super Bowls (in 1967 and 1973), and numerous other major sporting events (and John F. Kennedy's acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention). But for 15 seasons from 1995-2009, there's been no professional football team calling it home. What's the stadium?

Answer: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Los Angeles hasn't been kind to its pro football teams. The Rams left in 1980 and the Raiders left in 1995. Luckily, the University of Southern California Trojans played their home games there. The stadium has been named a National Historic Landmark.
