Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run against a pitcher that he had not faced since 2002. What Washington Nationals pitcher gave up the record-breaking home run on August 7th, 2007?

Answer: Mike Bacsik

Both Mike Bacsik and Barry Bonds knew that the ball was gone once Bonds connected. Bacsik and Bonds showed great sportsmanship by Bacsik tipping his hat to Bonds, and Bonds giving Bacsik an autographed bat after the game.
2. Luckily for the San Francisco Giants fans, Barry Bonds was able to hit his record-breaking home run at AT&T Park. To what part of the ballpark did Barry hit number 756?

Answer: Right centerfield

The titanic shot landed several rows back in the right centerfield bleachers. A skirmish for the baseball ensued immediately after it reached the stands.
3. With cameras flashing all around the stadium, Barry Bonds gave fans a unique home run pose after the historic swing. What did Barry do after he dropped the bat knowing he had hit number 756?

Answer: He stood still and raised both hands in the air before breaking into a home run trot

While some may view what he did as a taunting measure, Barry Bonds appeared to be overcome by emotion and the realization that he had achieved a remarkable record rather than trying to show up the pitcher or opposing team. Bonds gave Bacsik (the pitcher) an autographed bat after the game.
4. On what type pitch did Barry Bonds hit home run number 756?

Answer: An 84 mile per hour fastball on a 3-2 pitch count

On the seventh pitch of the at-bat, Barry got an 84 mile per hour fastball that he absolutely clobbered. Bacsik had thrown a curveball on the previous pitch, but he decided to throw a 3-2 fastball on the seventh pitch.
5. Barry Bonds' 756th home run was a no-doubter. Approximately how far (in feet) did this great home run travel?

Answer: 435 feet

Four hundred and thirty-five feet is a distance that'll make a baseball travel out of almost any dimension of any Major League ballpark. The home run was about 50 feet farther than his record-tying home run.
6. What individual appeared on the JumboTron shortly after Barry Bonds hit number 756, with a taped statement congratulated the new Home Run king and put the record into a historical context?

Answer: Hank Aaron

During the home run, Hank Aaron's failure to adequately comment on Barry Bonds breaking the record has received much attention. Even though he did not attend the game, Aaron's taped statement meant a lot to Barry as it seemed to in effect, 'pass the torch' to him. Bud Selig called and congratulated Bonds and both Wille Mays and Frank Robinson were in attendance for the game.
7. As with many of Barry Bonds' home runs in the 2007 season, his 756th career home run came with no one on base. Which of his at-bats in the game did he hit number 756?

Answer: 3

In the bottom of the fifth inning and during his third at-bat of the game, Barry Bonds made history on August 7, 2007. In his previous two at-bats, he hit a double and a single. He was removed from the game during the sixth inning.
8. What was the score in the game after Barry Bonds hit home run number 756?

Answer: Giants were leading 5-4

The home run put the Giants in the lead 5-4, and it resulted in Barry Bonds' third run scored of the game. Bonds was just a triple short of hitting for the cycle, a feat he had never achieved in his illustrious career.
9. Which of these groups of people did Barry Bonds not thank in his speech, shortly after hitting the record-breaking home run?

Answer: The previous home run record holders whose legacy will live forever

Barry Bonds also thanked his father, 'for everything', shortly before coming to tears and ending his speech. He joked that he was glad that he broke the record before his kids had to go back to school.
10. While Barry Bonds was receiving his congratulations, a 22 year-old individual named Matt Murphy was being taken away by ballpark security. Which of the following is true in regards to Matt Murphy and home run number 756?

Answer: He was yelling from the bottom of the pile that he had the baseball, but approximately 30 people formed a dogpile and he obtained several lacerations and bruises

Matt Murphy was wearing a New York Mets jersey that had tears in it, and he was high-fiving fans as he was being taken away. Shortly afterwards, Murphy let it be known that he and a friend were in San Francisco for a one day layover on their way to Australia.
11. What announcers called the '756' game for ESPN, whose call and further commentary of the home run will surely be heard by many in years to come?

Answer: Dave O'Brien and Rick Sutcliffe

In my opinion, Dave O'Brien's call of the home run shot was not quite as memorable as Milo Hamilton's call of Hank Aaron's 715th Home Run that included, 'Out of here. It's gone. It's 715. There's a new home run champion of all-time and it's Henry Aaron.' Jon Miller who also called the game for KNBR radio had a much more indelible description of the shot than the ESPN crew. We'll all likely remember his, "And he swings. And there's a long one. Deep into the right-center field. Way back there.

It's gone! A home run! An extraordinary shot to the deepest part of the yard. And Barry Bonds, with 756 home runs, he has hit more home runs than anyone who has ever played the game."
12. In interviews after the game, a reporter asked Barry Bonds if he believed that the home run record had become 'tainted.' How did Barry respond to this statement?

Answer: He stated, "This record is not tainted at all, at all, period.

Barry Bonds was obviously annoyed at the question as it seemed to be more of an accusation. Bud Selig released a statement that said that this is a time for Barry to be congratulated and that the Mitchell Investigation will uncover/disprove the performance-enhancing drugs issue in due course.
13. In another interview after the game, Barry Bonds was asked by ESPN's Erin Andrews what his plans were now that he had broken the record. What did Barry tell the world that his future baseball plans are?

Answer: To continue to play

This answer seems to have shocked Erin Andrews and surely it shocked many viewers who believe 2007 will likely be Barry's last season. Andrews asked Barry if he was serious and he again responded affirmatively.
14. At the beginning of the season, many people felt that Barry Bonds was too old and too far away from the home run record to be able to break the record in 2007. What number home run of 2007 put Barry Bonds on top of the all-time home run list, and silenced those aforementioned doubters?

Answer: 22

22 is a far cry from the pace of the 2001 season in which he hit 71 home runs.
15. Only time will tell how long Barry Bonds will remain atop Major League Baseball's career home run list. The previous two leaders at the time, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth, both held the record for a considerable amount of time. Which of the two held the record longer?

Answer: Babe Ruth held the record for 53 years, about 20 years longer than Hank Aaron held it

Babe Ruth became baseball's home run king in 1921 and held that title until 1974. Hank Aaron was baseball's home run king from 1974 until 2007. With powerful young hitters like Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols in today's game, it will be interesting to see how long Barry Bonds remains as the home run leader.
