Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was "Rapid Robert"?

Answer: Bob Feller

Bob Feller was famous Cleveland Indian pitcher, along with being an all-time great pitcher, and for having a very good fastball. He first reached the major leagues at the young age of 17, and struck out 17 batters in one of his first games.
2. I was Juan Gonzalez, a great hitter who won two MVP awards. What did people call me in my day?

Answer: Juan Gone

Juan hit 434 home runs, good for 36th on the all time list (as of March 2007), an impressive feat. In addition to his two MVP awards, he won 6 Silver Slugger awards and had three All-Star appearances.
3. Lefty is a common nickname for many pitchers. Which of these pitchers was not nicknamed "lefty"?

Answer: Bob Gibson

Steve Carlton, Vernon "Lefty" Gomez, and Robert "Lefty" Grove were all left-handed pitchers, while Gibson was a righty. However, all were great in their own right, and each reached the Hall of Fame.
4. I was nicknamed "The Wizard" for my defensive prowess, and some call me the greatest defensive shortstop of all time. Who am I?

Answer: Osborne Smith

Ozzy Smith won 13 Gold Gloves for his prowess at the position of shortstop, and was an All-Star 15 times. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.
5. I may not have been the greatest home run hitter of all time. I was one of the best home run hitters of my generation, yet I have just 96 career home runs. Somehow I garnered the nickname "Home Run". Who am I?

Answer: Frank Baker

In a 14-year career, Frank "Home Run" Baker hit 96 home runs, which would have made him one of the worst power hitters had he played in the 1990s. However, from 1908 to 1922, Home Run Baker had four separate seasons in which he won a home run title.
6. I was nicknamed "Chief" because I came from a Native American tribe. However, in a 22 year career, I would impress my skeptics, eventually being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953. Who am I?

Answer: Charles Bender

Chief Bender was a great pitcher who threw a no-hitter in 1910. In three separate seasons he led the league in Win/Loss percentage, and in 1906 actually hit 3 home runs, good for eighth place in the home run race that year.
7. I am "The Kid" and "Junior".

Answer: Ken Griffey

Ken Griffey, Sr., was considered to be a great player in his days, hitting over 150 home runs with the Reds, Yankees, Braves, and Mariners. However, his son, also named Ken, was even better, and has already hit 563 home runs. Ken Griffey, Jr, has won one MVP award, 12 All-Star Game appearances, seven Silver Slugger awards, and 6 Gold Gloves, and is likely a lock for the Hall of Fame.
8. Which of these players did not have a commonly used nickname?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Carl Hubbell was "The Meal Ticket", you probably know James Hunter better as "Catfish" hunter, and Gordon Cochrane was "Mickey". Sandy Koufax is considered to be one of the greatest Jewish baseball players ever, and won three Cy Young awards and a season MVP award.

However, he wasn't dominating early in his career and retired at the "young" age of 30, so some say that he may not deserve the Hall of Fame recognition he has received. Regardless, Sandy was a great player.
9. I was known as "the Rock" for my solid body shape, though some say that it was in reference to a drug that I would use.

Answer: Tim Raines

Tim Raines was a successful major league player and over the next few years will likely contend for a Hall of Fame nod. Next to contemporary Rickey Henderson, his achievements pale, but he will likely be remembered as one of the greatest leadoff hitters of all time.

He won one batting title, four stolen base titles, and had the highest stolen-base percentage all time of any player with over 150 stolen bases. He stole 808 bases and was caught just 146 times, good for a .847 stolen base percentage.
10. I'm considered to be one of the greatest all-time catchers, and some say that I may be the best all-time. I played in 14 World Series. Some remember me best for my enigmatic way of talking. Who am I?

Answer: Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra played all but one of his seasons on the great Yankees of the '40s, '50s, and '60s. He won three MVP awards, and was an All-Star 15 times. He appeared in 14 World Series. He was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
