Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following PLAYERS won back-to-back American League batting titles in the 1950s?

Answer: Ferris Fain

Fain batted .344 and .327, in 1951 and 1952 for the Athletics of Philadelphia. At the end of the 1952 season, he was traded to the White Sox. He played only 9 seasons in baseball. None of the other players listed, played in the Majors in the 1950s.
2. Who broke Ty Cobb's streak of nine straight batting titles in 1916?

Answer: Tris Speaker

After playing for 10 years with the Red Sox, Speaker's first year with Cleveland produced a batting title of .386 in 1916, to beat out Cobb who batted .371 that year. Speaker retired with a .345 career batting average after 22 seasons. No other player listed had been born yet.
3. Milt Pappas lost a perfect game by one pitch, with two outs in the ninth inning in 1972. What happened on that pitch?

Answer: Walked a pinch-hitter

Pappas with the Cubs, walked Padres pinch-hitter Larry Stahl on a 3-2 pitch. The Cubs won the game 8-0. I would wager that the umpire had an escort after the game.
4. Who was the first switch-hitter, to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game?

Answer: Wally Schang

Of those listed, Wally was the only switch-hitter. Schang of Philadelphia hit these on September 8th, 1916, at Shibe Park, off Allan Russell and Slim Love of the Yankees.
5. What player in the National League, hit the first home run in an All-Star game in 1933?

Answer: Frankie Frisch

Frisch of the Cardinals, was the one in the 1933 inaugural game at Comiskey Park. The others listed, played the game 30 years later in the American League.
6. Who was the first catcher to lead the National League in triples in a season?

Answer: Tim McCarver

The only catcher listed was McCarver, who with the Cardinals, hit 13 triples in 1966 (he was the only catcher who achieved this mark during the 20th century). The only American League catcher to do it during the 20th century, was Carlton Fisk in 1972 who hit 9.
7. Which of the following sluggers has had the most consecutive 200-hit seasons?

Answer: Wade Boggs

Boggs had 7 consecutive seasons with 200 or more hits, from 1983 to 1989. Charlie Gehringer once had 5 consecutive seasons.
8. At 58 years old, Satchel Paige retired from Major League baseball for the last time. How many MLB seasons did he play in throughout his career?

Answer: 6

Paige only played in 6 seasons. He played the 1948 and 1949 seasons with Cleveland, then 1951 through 1953 seasons with the St.Louis Browns. After coming out of retirement, he played in one game in 1965 with the Kansas City Athletics. His career win-loss record was 28-31.
9. When Joe DiMaggio retired, how many players had hit more career home runs than him?

Answer: 4

Joe retired with 361. Only four players had hit more home runs. They were Ruth (714), Foxx (534), Ott (511), and Gehrig (493). 361 was quite a feat for only playing 14 years. Since then, Joe has dropped down on the list dramatically.
10. What MVP played with the Astros, Reds, Giants, Phillies, and A's, during his baseball career?

Answer: Joe Morgan

Joe was a MVP, All-Star, and has two World Series Championships to his credit also. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
