Smith broke in with the San Diego Padres but is most famous for his time with the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a .262 lifetime average and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003. Ashburn played centerfield for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets.

He won batting titles in 1955 and 1958, and was elected to the Hall of Fame 1995. Since their retirement, the Phillies and Cardinals have both retired their number 1.
