The Yankees began life as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, and played their first home game on April 26th, beating Boston 10-6 at Orioles Park. Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the defunct franchise on January 9th, 1903 and moved the team to New York. As their home field, an all-wood park at 168th Street and Broadway, was one of the highest spots in Manhattan, the club was named the New York Highlanders and their home Hilltop Park. Their first game on April 22nd, 1903 was a 1-3 loss at Washington. Their first home game was also a victory, 6-2 v Washington on May 1st. Pinstripes became a part of the Highlanders' uniforms on April 11th, 1912, creating a look that would become one of the most famous uniform design in sports. A year later the Highlanders were officially renamed the New York Yankees when they moved to the Polo Grounds, home of the NL's New York Giants.
