Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Hall of Fame great played with the Yankees for 13 seasons. He won three MVP awards in his career, and also had two other brothers play in the Major Leagues. Who is this "D"?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Joe played from 1936-1951. His MVPs came in 1939, 1941, and 1947. He was also runner-up another two times. His brothers were Dom who played his career with the Red Sox, and Vince who played mostly with the Pirates.
2. This Hall of Fame pitcher was the first "D" to win the coveted Cy Young Award. Who is he?

Answer: Don Drysdale

The 14-season career Dodger wore the familiar number 53 on his back. He won the Cy Young in 1962 when only one award was given out in the entire Major Leagues. He went 25-9 with 232 strikeouts. He topped Jack Sanford of the Giants for the award.
3. This hall inductee played both for the Yankees and Dodgers, and then went on to manage the New York Giants to a World Series crown. Who was this "D"?

Answer: Leo Durocher

Nicknamed the "Lip", Leo took the Brooklyn Dodgers to a NL pennant as player-manager in 1941. He took over the Giants in 1948, and won the World Series in 1954. Durocher was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994, three years after his death.
4. This "D" ended up in the Hall of Fame, but not before he ended up at the bottom of Niagara Falls in 1903. Who was this "D" who played most of his career with the Phillies?

Answer: Ed Delahanty

Ed played from 1888 until mid-season 1903 when this mystery still lives today. It has never been determined whether he fell accidentally, was pushed, or committed suicide on that second day of July. Ed won the NL batting title in 1899 by batting .410, and led the league in home runs twice. After many seasons with the Phillies, he was traded to the Senators in 1902.
5. Which "D" pitcher won the first World Series game for the American League in 1903?

Answer: Bill Dinneen

After losing to the Pirates in game one, Boston and Dinneen evened the score in game two with a 3-0 shutout. The Boston Americans went on to win the first World Series, five games to three. Dinneen was 3-1 in the series while starting in four games.
6. This sweetheart of a "D" pitched nine seasons with the Mets, and another five with the Athletics in the 1990s. His best season was in 1988 when he went 17-9. Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Ron Darling

Darling played in 13 seasons from 1983-1995. Ron went to one World Series with the Mets in a 1986 win against the Red Sox.
7. This future Hall of Fame "D" was in his final season with the Yankees in 1946, when a rookie and future Hall of Fame great Yogi Berra was there to take his place. Who was this "D" catching guru that spent his entire career of 17 seasons with the Yankees?

Answer: Bill Dickey

Bill was a rookie in 1928, and was treated to watch his first World Series in 1928 as a Yankee. He did not play until the next series in 1932, and would play in seven more. Dickey was inducted into the hall in 1954.
8. This "D" was a fixture behind home plate for the Phillies in the 1960s. He had the honor of catching for Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning, and Woody Fryman. Who is this catcher?

Answer: Clay Dalrymple

Clayton played from 1960-1971. After nine seasons with the Phillies, he was traded to the Orioles for Ron Stone. He found one World Series in 1969 against the Mets, and had two singles in the series loss. He retired as an Oriole.
9. This "D" was a historical landmark with the Cleveland Indians in 1947. He was MVP runner-up only once in his career, but his presence in 1947 made some heads turn. Who is this Hall of Famer?

Answer: Larry Doby

Fans turned their heads to take notice because Larry was the first African-American to play in the American League. He was runner-up MVP to Yankee Yogi Berra in 1954 in a very close balloting. Doby retired after 13 seasons, taking home his World Series ring from 1948.
10. This Hall of Fame pitcher won 30 games in 1934, but his career was over after an injury in the 1937 All-Star game. Who was this "D"?

Answer: Dizzy Dean

Dean went 30-7 with the Cardinals in 1934, and watched his teammate brother Paul with a 19-11 record. It would not be for 35 seasons before another pitcher would win 30 games (Tigers Denny McLain, 1968). Dizzy retired with 150-83 record.
