Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Duke shared the record for most wins (37) in a single season with UNLV and Illinois, until that was eclipsed by what team?

Answer: Memphis

The Memphis Tigers won an NCAA record 38 games in 2008, finishing 38-2 for the season, and runner-up in the championship game.
2. When Duke won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship in 2001, it was their _____ win.

Answer: 3rd

They won back-to-back championships in 1991-1992, and won their 3rd in 2001.
3. In 1991, Duke had to beat which team in the National semi-final to reach the championship game?

Answer: UNLV

UNLV won the title in 1990 by humiliating Duke with dunk after dunk in a 103-73 pounding. They entered the tournament in 1991 as favorites to repeat, also attempting to be the 1st team since Indiana in 1976 to go undefeated. UNLV entered the National semi-final game with a 34-0 record, and were heavily favored to repeat the previous season's dominance of Duke.

However, Duke pulled off the stunning upset, 79-77, and went on to defeat Kansas 72-65 to win the 1991 championship.
4. Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski has assisted or coached Team USA in International Competition several times. He coached Team USA to the Gold Medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Was Coach K awarded a medal along with the rest of the team?

Answer: No

Only the players are awarded medals in team competition. However, as a touching gesture, all 12 members of the team placed their medals around Coach K's neck, and posed for a picture with him. NBA greats such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, and the rest of Team USA helped give him quite a souvenir.
5. Where is the Blue Devils' Cameron Indoor Stadium home located?

Answer: Durham, NC

They are located just 7 short miles away from their Chapel Hill arch-rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels. This, by the way, is arguably the biggest rivalry in college basketball.
6. In 1992, Duke became the first team since UCLA in 1972-1973 to be repeat champions. Do you know who they defeated in the NCAA Championship game?

Answer: Michigan

Duke impressively defended their 1991 Championship, handling Michigan rather easily 71-51 for their second National Championship. Incidentally, Michigan would make it to the title game the following year, only to fall short to another ACC team, North Carolina. In 2006-07, the Florida Gators became the first repeat champions since Duke accomplished the feat in 1991-1992.
7. What Duke player held the ACC career scoring record with 2769 points, until North Carolina player Tyler Hansbrough broke that record in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament?

Answer: J. J. Redick

J.J. was an outstanding collegiate player, and set a NCAA record for career 3-pointers made with 457, hitting an impressive 40.4% taken.
8. Who hit the game-winning shot in the 1992 Regional Final game that allowed Duke to advance to the Final Four, ultimately winning their second National Title?

Answer: Christian Laettner

This was arguably the best college basketball game ever. A trip to the 1992 Final Four was at stake, an epic battle between Kentucky and Duke. Back and forth both teams went, hitting shot after shot (both teams combined for an astonishing 61% FG percentage for the game), and the game was tied 93-93 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, the drama continued and all seemed lost when Kentucky's Sean Woods made an improbable shot over the outstretched Laettner's arm to put Kentucky ahead 103-102 with 2.1 seconds remaining. You might know the rest. Grant Hill threw the ball 3/4 the length of the court, Laettner caught it at the top of the key, he faked one way, turned the other, and lofted the game-winning goal as time expired. 104-103 and a trip to the Final Four.

Incidentally, Christian Laettner was perfect that game, 10 for 10 from the field, and 10 for 10 from the free throw line, for 31 points.
9. What is the student section attending Duke home games affectionately known as?

Answer: Cameron Crazies

The Cameron Crazies are probably the most imitated, but never duplicated group of fans in all of sports. Many traditions now practiced at universities all over the country started at Duke, to include the famous "Air Ball" chant that has been said to have originated at Duke in 1979.
10. Who did Duke defeat in the 2001 NCAA Final to collect yet another National Championship?

Answer: Arizona

Duke had an extreme battle just to get to the championship game, in the National semi-final against Maryland. Duke had to erase a 22-point first half deficit to emerge victorious. In the championship game, Duke outlasted the sensational starting five of the Arizona Wildcats 82-72, to win their third National Title in nine years (1991, 1992 and 2001).
