Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two players were inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame on July 27, 2003?

Answer: Gary Carter and Eddie Murray

The others listed were inducted at least 10 years earlier. Carter spent 19 seasons in baseball, mostly with Montreal and the Mets. This 11 time all-star, was the season runner-up MVP in 1980 with the Expos, taking a back seat to Mike Schmidt of the Phillies. Murray saw 22 seasons, mostly with the Orioles. He became a member of the 500 home run club in 1996.
2. The great Ted Williams hit 521 career home runs. How many were with the Boston Red Sox?

Answer: 521

Williams played his entire 19-season career with the Red Sox. He missed the 1943, 1944, and 1945 seasons due to military obligations. He retired in 1960, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966.
3. Which of the following players, has not won multiple season MVP Awards?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others listed, won consecutive MVP Awards. Amazingly enough, Ryan not only did not win a MVP Award, but did not win a Cy Young Award either. His closest Cy Young Award was a 1973 Angel runner-up to Baltimore's Jim Palmer.
4. Which 'Lip' made a famous quote of, "nice guys finish last"?

Answer: Leo Durocher

Leo 'the lip' Durocher, both as a player and a manager made this infamous quote. Durocher was once ejected for screaming an obscenity at an umpire, and accusing him of being blind. When the umpire asked what he just said, Leo exclaimed, "My God, you're deaf too"!
5. Which of these teams did not exist in the 1960s?

Answer: St.Louis Browns

Even the Pilots made an appearance in 1969, there only season in baseball. The Browns became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954, after having the Browns' name since 1902.
6. Which of the following racist managers, retired with 1296 wins in the 19th century?

Answer: Cap Anson

The others listed, appeared in baseball in the 20th century. Anson was a player-manager with the Chicago franchise in the 19th century. His Chicago White Stockings / Colts / Orphans, and later to be Cubs, won the National League Championship 5 times. His racism was well documented in the baseball history books.
7. I spent 13 seasons in the Majors. 11 times I batted over .300 with Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago. 4 times I had over 200 hits in a season. I went to 2 World Series, the 2nd one in 1919 was my demise in baseball. Some people made fun of my footwear. Who am I?

Answer: Joe Jackson

The others did not play for at least another 35 years. 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson was statistically one of the top 10 greatest players in history. His numbers would either equal or surpass most of the great ones. His 'demise' was the 1919 World Series, pitting his Chicago White Sox against the Cincinnati Reds in the Black Sox Series, which marred baseball forever in this fixing of a World Series. 1920 was his last season.
8. Which of the following players, did not lose any baseball time due to World War II?

Answer: Willie Mays

Both Williams and DiMaggio lost 3 baseball seasons, and Musial lost only the 1945 season. Mays was a rookie in 1951, well after the war.
9. Who was the first batter in National League history, to hit over .400 in a season?

Answer: Ross Barnes

The others listed, did not play in the Majors for another 100 years, and never hit .400 at all. Barnes, with the newly formed National League and Chicago White Stockings, hit .429 in 1876. This 2nd baseman held the record for 12 seasons, until Tip O'Neill and Hugh Duffy later topped him. Ross is still ranked number 3 all-time, and will most likely stay there.
10. Which of the following was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1918?

Answer: None listed

The Hall of Fame did not begin taking members until 1936. The initial inductees along with Wagner, Cobb, and Johnson, were Babe Ruth and Christy Mathewson.
