Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In honor of the 21st Dummies Baseball quiz, which of the following Hall of Famers, wore the number 21?

Answer: Roberto Clemente

The others listed, all wore the number 44 (Jackson had others). Clemente, spent his entire career which was shortened, with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955-1972. He was killed 2 months after the '72 season in a humanitarian aircraft relief mission. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame the following year in 1973.
2. Which of the following greats never hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others listed have all done it since 1997. Ryan was a pitcher, and fell a little short of the 50-season mark. His season high home run numbers are 1. He hit only 2 big ones in his career. He hit one in 1980, and another in 1987, both with Houston. He played 12 seasons with Designated Hitter teams, the Texas Rangers and the Angels.
3. What team won the 1944 World Series?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The other teams did not exist in 1944. The '44 Series saw a 'St. Louis Series' with the Cardinals going head up against the Browns of St.Louis. The Cardinals, who were heavily favored, defeated the Browns 4 games to 2. This was Stan Musial's 3rd of 4 World Series, as he batted .304.
4. Not too many fans remember me. My nickname was 'Kitten'. I pitched for 5 teams in 14 seasons. I only went to one World Series, and had two wins against the Yankees in 1960. I was the winning pitcher in the game that Maz's home run in the bottom of the 9th inning, gave us our World Series ring. Some people remember me for pitching 12 perfect innings in a game. Who am I?

Answer: Harvey Haddix

The others listed, were all Yankee pitchers in 1960. Pirate Bill Mazeroski hit a bottom of the 9th inning home run, to win the Series at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh in 1960. Harvey retired in 1965.
5. Which of the following greats, have at least 2 Cy Young Awards, 2 season MVP Awards, and 2 Rookie of the Year Awards?

Answer: None listed

All listed have won consecutive Cy Young Awards, but that is where it stops. None listed have won a season MVP, and none have won a Rookie of the Year Award. It is impossible for a player to win a Rookie of the Year Award twice. A player is only eligible for a Rookie of the Year Award in their rookie season.
6. Connie Mack managed for 53 seasons of baseball. How many World Series did he win?

Answer: 5

Had Mack managed the Yankees, he could have possibly won 15 or more. But, with his first 3 seasons with Pittsburgh from 1894-1896, then another 50 with the Philadelphia Athletics, he mustered only 5. His tastes of victory were in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and finally in 1930.

He went a dry spell of 20 years before he retired in 1950, never finishing better than 3rd, except in 1932. His 53 seasons gave him 3582 career wins. He also posted the most losses in history with 3814 losses. These marks will never be duplicated.
7. The Florida Marlins began their franchise with what name?

Answer: Marlins

The Marlins began their franchise in 1993 in Florida under Rene Lachemann. It would take 5 seasons for the Marlins to win the coveted World Series. They defeated the Cleveland Indians 4 games to 3, under the management of Jim Leyland. The Series MVP was the Marlins' Livan Hernandez.
8. Which of the following, has never hit 70 home runs in a season?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Mac hit 70 in 1998 with Cardinals, and Barry hit his 73 in 2001 with the Giants. The Babe hit 60 big ones in 1927.
9. I played for 4 teams in only 12 seasons of my career. I won 2 American League MVPs. I went to 7 World Series in my career also. I was most noted for breaking Babe Ruth's season home run record. Who am I?

Answer: Roger Maris

Maris created baseball's most famous asterisk, by hitting 61 home runs in the 1961 season, which was 162 games. The Babe hit 60 in 1927, during a 154 game season. This asterisk held until 1998, when Mark McGwire hit 70. Sammy Sosa also hit 66 that season, but McGwire was the first to surpass Maris.
10. Who was the first manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks?

Answer: Buck Showalter

The others listed, retired before the 1998 season, and Billy Martin died in 1989. Buck took the team to a Divison Title in their 2nd season in 1999, and saw the team win 100 games in a season for the first time. In 2000, Arizona finished in 3rd place. The following season in 2001, after Showalter left the team, the Diamondbacks won the World Series with Bob Brenly at the helm.
