1. Who was the first pitcher in 2003, to save 40 games in the season?

Answer: John Smoltz

None of the others listed played in 2003. Smoltz, still comfortable in the bullpen after many years as a starter, led the Braves and the Major League in saves during the season.

2. In honor of quiz #30, what jersey-wearing 30 was the first to steal 100 bases in a season?

Answer: Maury Wills

The others listed were all pitchers. Wills in a Dodger uniform, finally broke Ty Cobb's record of 96 in a season, when he stole 104 in 1962.

3. Which of the following is a member of the 500 club?

Answer: Frank Robinson

The others listed, never reached the 400 plateau. Robinson, who played for the Reds and Orioles mainly, retired with 586 home runs in 1976, after playing for 21 seasons. Ironically, Frank led the league only once in home runs, by hitting 49 in 1966, the first season after the Reds moved him to Baltimore.

None of the others listed ever played for the Yankees, or hit 500 home runs, nor wore the number 7. The 'Commerce Comet' as Mantle was nicknamed, won 3 season MVP Awards and the Triple Crown in 1956. 16 seasons he made the All-Star team. He retired in 1968, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974. He died in 1995.

5. Which of the following, had more career losses on the mound?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others listed were not pitchers. It only seems logical, that Ryan who spent 27 seasons in the Majors, would have more losses than most. When Ryan retired in 1993, he ranked 3rd all-time for career losses behind Cy Young with 316, and Pud Galvin with 310. Ryan retired with a record of 324-292.

6. How many players were inducted into the Hall of Fame, in its first year of awarding it?

Answer: 5

In 1936, the Hall opened its doors to Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. 8 were inducted the following year, and only 3 the next.

Answer: Roger Craig

Craig went 5-22 for the 1963 New York Mets. This was worse than his previous Met season, as he was 10-24 in the Mets' first season in 1962. In 1959, he led the National League in shutouts as a Dodger with 4.

Answer: Greg Pinchbeck

Cuellar had the best record, pulling in a 24-8, while McNally threw a 24-9 season, and Palmer threw a 20-10 record. Strangely enough, McNally was the runner-up for the Cy Young Award to Jim Perry of the Twins, while Mike Cuellar was 4th.

9. 2002 Hall of Fame inductee Ozzie Smith, played 15 seasons with what team?

Answer: St. Louis

Smith only played for the Padres and the Cardinals. After 4 seasons with San Diego, they moved him to St.Louis in 1982. A trade that the Padres wish that would have back, Smith would grab 11 more Gold Glove Awards. Ozzie was a 15 time all-star. He retired in 1996, after also stealing 580 bases.

10. What player was known as, "Mr. Cub"?

Answer: Ernie Banks

Banks spent his entire career in Chicago for 19 seasons. This 11 time all-star won 2 Most Valuable Player awards, and smacked 512 career home runs. He retired in 1971, and most deservingly was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.
