Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is NOT true about the first test between England and New Zealand?

Answer: The match was played at the Oval

The match was played at Lord's, the home of English cricket. Michael Vaughan, the England captain, was unable to play owing to an injured knee, so Trescothick captained the team. Darrell Hair, from Australia, and Rudi Koertzen, from South Africa, were the umpires.
2. Mark Richardson just missed out on a century in New Zealand's first innings. While scoring 93 he was involved in two partnerships worth 100 or more runs. With which players did he share these partnerships?

Answer: Nathan Astle and Jacob Oram

Richardson and Astle put on 103 for the second wicket, before Astle was dismissed by Flintoff. He then shared in a fifth wicket partnership of 106 with Jacob Oram. This partnership was ended by Harmison, who trapped Richardson lbw with the score on 280.
3. Which bowler took the most wickets in the match?

Answer: Stephen Harmison

Harmison took four wickets in each New Zealand innings: 4-126 in the first and 4-76 in the second. Jones and Martin took four wickets each, and Flintoff took three.
4. Which milestone did Cairns pass in his rapid 82?

Answer: He passed Viv Richards' record for sixes in test cricket

When he hit his third six, Cairns passed the record held by Richards for the number of sixes hit in test matches. It looked as though he would pass another record set by Richards, that of the fastest test hundred, but unfortunately, he fell 18 runs short of this.
5. Andrew Strauss was busy reaching milestones of his own. What was significant about his century?

Answer: He joined the exclusive ranks of those who have scored a century in their first test innings

Strauss was the first English batsman to score a century in his maiden test innings. Previously, John Hampshire scored a century against the West Indies in 1969. Others have scored a century in their first test - notably Graham Thorpe - but in the second innings of the match. Strauss actually brought up his hundred by hitting a four through the covers off the bowling of Martin.
6. How many catches did Geraint Jones take in the match?

Answer: 7

Jones took seven catches, three in the first innings and four in the second. This was Jones' second test match, and these were the first seven catches of his test career.
7. Which of these innings saw the most fours being scored?

Answer: Richardson's 93

Richardson hit 17 fours in his first innings 93. Trescothick and Hussain both hit thirteen and McCullum hit fourteen fours.
8. Who scored more runs in the match, Andrew Strauss or Mark Richardson?

Answer: Strauss

Strauss made a total of 195 runs (112 and 83), while Richardson scored 194 (93 and 101).
9. Nasser Hussain completed his century and England's victory by hitting Martin for four runs.

Answer: False

Hussain took his score to 102* with a four off the penultimate delivery of the over. He scored a single from the last ball of Martin's over to take England to 3/282 and so to victory.
10. Who was declared the Man of the Match?

Answer: Andrew Strauss

Although Hussain and Richardson both scored centuries, it was Strauss' innings that really put England on the road to victory. Add to this the fact that he was playing in his first test match and you have a real Man of the Match.
