Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first rules for netball were drawn up in 1895. In which country did netball originate?

Answer: USA

In 1891, James Naismith invented basketball as a way to keep young men at the School for Christian Workers (YMCA) occupied. Women's indoor basketball followed, but within a few years dribbling ceased to exist in the women's game. The game moved outdoors onto grass, the court was divided into three zones, and the baskets were replaced by rings with a net.

By the time the first set of codified rules were published in 1900, the game had become "netball". The rules were standardised internationally in 1960.
2. Netball was first (officially) played in 1895 at Madame Ostenburg's College. In which country is this college?

Answer: England

From Madame Ostenburg's College, the game of netball quickly spread throughout Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Jamaica.
Broomsticks were used as goalposts and wet paper bags for baskets. Netball was also played on grass.
3. The International Federation of Women's Basketball and Netball was formed in 1960 in which country?

Answer: Sri Lanka

The International Federation of Women's Basketball and Netball was formed in Sri Lanka as the result of a meeting between England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and The West Indies in an attempt to standardize the rules of the sport. At this meeting, it was also decided to hold World Championships every four years.
4. The first netball World Championships were held in Eastbourne, England in 1963. Of the first 10 World Championships, in which country were they not held?

Answer: Fiji

Of the first 10 times the World Championships were held, England, Australia, and Jamaica each held them twice (1963 & 1995 - England, 1967 & 1991 - Australia, and 1971 & 2003 - Jamaica), Trinidad & Tobago in 1979, Singapore in 1983, Scotland in 1987. The World Championships were due to be held in Fiji in 2007 but, due to a political coup in the country, they were transferred to New Zealand, making the New Zealand the only country to hold the World Championships three times (1975, 1999, and 2003).
5. Which country dominated netball by winning nine of the first 12 World Championships?

Answer: Australia

Australia won each of the World Championships between 1971 and 1999. They also won the first World Championships in 1963, and again in 2007. The 1979 win was shared with New Zealand and Trinidad & Tobago.
6. Apart from Australia or New Zealand dominating the early Netball Championships, which other country joined those two as the third winner?

Answer: Trinidad & Tobago

Trinidad & Tobago tied for first place with Australia and New Zealand in 1979 when the World Championships were held in their own country. They finished second in 1987 and third in 1983. South Africa and England are also the only other teams (apart form Australia or New Zealand) to finish higher than third place. Jamaica is the only other country to finish in the top three places (third in 1991, 2003, and 2007).
7. In 1995, netball became a recognized Olympic sport but did not feature in the Olympic Games. It does, however, appear in the Commonwealth Games. In which Commonwealth Games did netball first appear?

Answer: 1998 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Australia won the gold medal in 1998 and 2002, with New Zealand winning in 2006. The only teams to feature in the medal tally for netball at a Commonwealth Games are England (bronze in 1998 and 2006) and Jamaica (bronze in 2002).
8. The stitching pattern on a netball is similar to the stitching pattern of a ball from which other sport?

Answer: Volleyball

The netball also resembles a basketball but is lighter, smaller, and softer. It is generally white and is a size 5. The youngest netball players (up to about the age of 7) use a size 4 netball. The size 4 ball is smaller, lighter, and easier to handle for younger children.
9. Which of the following is not an official name for a variation of children's netball in Australia?

Answer: Net Skills

Fun Net involves 5-7 year old children with an emphasis on basic motor skills, fun, and activities. Goal posts are 2.4m high (shorter than the standard 3m) and a size 4 netball is used.
Netta is an introduction to netball for children aged over 7 years and is basically a modified rules game.
High Five is a game played using only five positions on the court and ensures a more involving game for children.
In both Netta and High Five, children must be given the opportunity to try each position on the court, but not necessarily in the one game.
10. In 2008, a new competition between which two countries caused netball to become a semi-professional sport?

Answer: Australia & New Zealand

The ANZ Championship was introduced in 2008 as a trans-Tasman competition between Australia and New Zealand. This competition consisted of 10 teams (five from each country) playing 69 matches over 17 weeks, between April to July each year.
