Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Babe Ruth set a single season record of hitting 59 home runs in 1921. Who broke this record and retired with that top spot?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth broke his own record set in 1921 by hitting 60 in 1927. He retired in 1935 holding this season record. Although he hit 60 in 1927, Yankee teammate Lou Gehrig won the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
2. George Burns of the Cleveland Indians set a season record for hitting 64 doubles in a season. Who broke his record with 67, and retired with it in 1931?

Answer: Earl Webb

None of the others listed played in the Major Leagues in 1931. Webb of the Boston Red Sox set this record, and held on to it throughout the rest of the century. Webb's previous season high was only 30.
3. In 1956, Robin Roberts of the Phillies gave up 46 home runs in the season. Who broke his record by allowing 50, then retired with it in 1992?

Answer: Bert Blyleven

Of the others listed, only Ryan played baseball in 1992, but never gave up more than 20 home runs in a season. Bert set this record with the Twins in 1986. If that weren't enough, he tied the previous record of 46 the following season in 1987. Blyleven gave up 430 home runs in his career, number six on the career list when he retired.
4. In modern day baseball (post 1920), I retired with a single season record of an amazing 1.12 ERA. Which pitcher am I?

Answer: Bob Gibson

The others listed were not pitchers. Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals blew the batters and the league away in 1968. 'Hoot' as he was nicknamed, broke the previous record of Spud Chandler, who had a 1.64 ERA with the Yankees in 1943. Bob retired with a career 2.91 ERA after 17 seasons.
5. In 1969, Bobby Bonds of the San Francisco Giants set a single season record for striking out 187 times. Who broke his record with 189 strikeouts and retired with it?

Answer: Bobby Bonds

The others never struck out 100 times in a season during their career. Bonds broke his own record in 1970 by striking out 189 times in the season. He retired with this dubious honor in 1981. Adam Dunn of the Reds topped Bobby's record in 2004 by striking out 195 times.
6. In my rookie season in 1883, I set a single season record for losing an amazing 48 games in the season. Who am I?

Answer: John Coleman

The others never lost more than 20 games in a season, and 1883 was long before their professional baseball careers. Coleman of the Philadelphia Quakers went 12-48 in the season. He won 12 of the 17 games that his team won in the season. Coleman started 65 games, which was not abnormal for pitchers of that era, but never started more than 25 again.

After only six seasons, John retired with a 23-72 record.
7. In 1920, Babe Ruth set a single season record by walking 148 times in the season. Who smashed his record in 1923 and retired with it?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The others didn't play baseball in 1923. Ruth walked an amazing 170 times in 1923 for the Yankees. Of those 170 walks, only four were a result of being hit by a pitch. Ruth walked over 100 times in a season, 13 times in his career. A dangerous issue when most of the time the great Lou Gehrig was on-deck.
8. When I retired in 1930, I took with me the record for most hits in a season with 257 that I set in 1920. This record stood for the rest of the century. Who am I?

Answer: George Sisler

The others didn't play in the Major League during the 1920s. Sisler set the record in 1920 with the St. Louis Browns. In what seemed like one of those impossible records to match, along came Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners in 2004 to hit 262.
9. Babe Ruth set a single season record by hitting 29 home runs in 1919 with the Red Sox. Whose season record did the Babe break from 1884?

Answer: Ned Williamson

The others were all pitchers and didn't play professionally until after the turn of the century. Williamson hit a tremendous 27 home runs in the 1884 season with the Chicago White Stockings of the National League. 27 home runs was an almost unheard of issue in that era.

In 13 seasons, Williamson never hit 10 home runs again. He retired with this season record in 1890. Ruth broke his own record of 29 in 1919 by hitting 54 in 1920 during his first season with the Yankees.
10. I retired in 1956 with the single season record for throwing the most walks. I allowed 208 walks in the 1938. Who am I?

Answer: Bob Feller

The others had not started their Major League career yet in 1938. Feller, a 1962 Hall of Fame inductee, walked 208 but also struck out 240 in 1938 with the Indians. It would be the only time in his 18-season career that he would reach the 200-walk mark. Two seasons later, Bob rebounded by winning the Triple Crown in 1940, but was runner-up to the Tigers' Hank Greenberg for the AL MVP.
