Napoles was born April 13, 1940, Santiago de Cuba, Oriente, Cuba. He left Cuba in 1962 to continue his boxing career in Mexico after Fidel Castro banned professional boxing in that country.

Supposetly past his prime, the then 29 year old Napoles stopped Curtis Cokes in 13 brutal rounds to win the title on April 18, 1969. He successfully defended against Cokes 71 days later (KO-10).
