Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Claude Harmon is best known for winning the 1948 Masters, and fathering some of the most famous golf coaches. However, he wasn't just a one-hit wonder. He had 11 top-10 finishes in majors in his career. Which was the only major he finished in the top 10 in during his first appearance in the event?

Answer: PGA Championship

Harmon finished 18th in his first Masters in 1946, was disqualified in his first U.S. Open in 1940, and finished 27th the only time he crossed the pond for the Open Championship in 1948. But at the 1945 PGA Championship, he made it all the way to the semi-finals (it was match play until 1957), the equivalent of a tie for third.
2. Gene Littler won his only major championship at the 1961 U.S. Open by one shot over Doug Sanders and Bob Goalby. In which year did he finish as the runner-up as a U.S. Open rookie?

Answer: 1954

Littler finished second to Ed Furgol in just his second major appearance at the 1954 U.S. Open. He would also finish second in the 1970 Masters and the 1977 PGA Championship.
3. Long before Tiger Woods won his first Masters in 1997, Lee Elder became the first black golfer to receive an invitation to Augusta National for the Masters Tournament. How did Elder do at that 1975 Masters?

Answer: Missed Cut

Elder shot rounds of 74 and 78 to miss the cut.
4. Which of these people was the last Masters champion of the 20th century to win the Green Jacket in his first try?

Answer: Fuzzy Zoeller

Floyd won it in his 12th attempt in 1976, Seve won it on his fourth try in 1980, and Stadler did it on his sixth try in 1982. But in 1979, Fuzzy Zoeller beat Ed Sneed and Tom Watson on the second hole of the first ever sudden death playoff at Augusta, in just his first appearance in the fabled tournament.
5. Who was the only player in the 1980s to win a major championship in his first appearance at that Major?

Answer: Bob Tway

Bob Tway chipped in from the bunker on the final hole to win the 1986 PGA Championship in just his fourth major appearance and first at the PGA. Hal Sutton won the 1983 PGA in his second appearance there.
6. John Daly went from "zero to hero" when he won which Major as a rookie in the event?

Answer: PGA Championship

Daly was the ninth and final alternate, but due to a stroke of luck got into the field without even taking a practice round. He won by three strokes over Bruce Lietzke, becoming the first PGA Tour rookie to win a major since Jerry Pate at the 1976 U.S. Open. Daly would win a second major title at the 1995 Open Championship. Costantino Rocca hit a 60-foot putt on the 72nd hole to force a four-hole playoff but was no match for "Long" John Daly in the end.
7. In which year did Tiger Woods win the Low Amateur award at the Masters in his first appearance at the event?

Answer: 1995

Woods tied for 41st in his first appearance at Augusta National. The following year he also won the low amateur at the Open Championship, finishing tied for 22nd. However, this was his second appearance overseas.
8. Jean van de Velde had a historic collapse on the 72nd hole at Carnoustie in the 1999 Open Championship. Other than his second place tie at that tournament, he only had one other top-25 at a Major before the Open went back to Carnoustie in 2007, and it came in his first appearance at that tournament. Which was it?

Answer: 2000 Masters Tournament

Although he made the cut in his first appearance in each of the U.S. Majors, his only top 25 was a tie for 19th at the 2000 Masters.
9. In 2003, Ben Curtis became the first golfer in the 21st century to win a Major in the first major tournament he ever appeared in, when he won the Open Championship at Royal St. George's. Who was the last golfer of the 20th century to accomplish the feat?

Answer: Francis Ouimet

20-year old Francis Ouimet won the 1913 U.S. Open in a playoff over Harry Vardon and Edward Ray. In six career U.S. Opens, he would have three top-5 finishes including his victory.
10. What Masters' rookie finished highest in the 2008 event?

Answer: Andres Romero

Romero tied for 8th, one shot ahead of Nick Watney. Pelle Edberg was the highest placing rookie at the 2007 Open Championship.
