1. 1942: World War II was still ongoing, but United participated in two leagues until 1945. The first one ran from August to December, and the second, from December to May. What was the name of these 'championships'?

Answer: Football League Northern Section

United had some pretty convincing scores during this season, as they ran out 13-1 winners at home to New Brighton, and a 10-3 win versus Wrexham, again at home. In the first championship, United finished fourth and scored 79 goals in 18 games, and in the second they won it.
2. 1943: United only signed one player this year. Who was he?

Answer: Henry Cockburn

Cockburn played 271 games for United, and scored 4 goals until leaving the club in 1954.
3. 1944: United played Burnley in the 'Wartime league', but what was the score?

Answer: United 9 Burnley 0

United finished 7th in this 'Northern league'.
4. 1945: Who took over as United manager this year?

Answer: Matt Busby

One of the most successful managers in United's history, Busby managed the club between 1945-69, and then again for a short while between 1970-71. Under Busby, United won five league titles, two FA Cups and a European Cup. Matt Busby became Sir Matt Busby in 1968, following United's 4-1 European Cup triumph, and the great man died on January 20, 1994, at the age of 85.
5. 1946: Which United legend was born in this year?

Answer: George Best

Best was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on May 22nd and played for United between 1963-74. After leaving the club, he played for numerous teams, and had a few spells in America with teams like San Jose Earthquakes, Los Angeles Galaxy and Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Liverpool topped the table, beating United into second place by one point.
7. 1948: United's biggest home attendance of the century happened this year, but who were the visitors?

Answer: Arsenal

The game took place at Manchester City's home ground, Maine Road on 17th January, as Old Trafford was going through rebuilding work after being hit by a World War II bomb. The attendance was 83,260. The previous home record, at Old Trafford, was 70,504 on 27th December, 1920 against Aston Villa. Also this year, United won the FA Cup for the second time, by beating Blackpool 4-2 in the final at Wembley Stadium.
8. 1949: United finished second in the league and reached the FA Cup semi-finals. Portsmouth won the title, but who knocked United out of the cup?

Answer: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves beat United 1-0 in a replay after the first game finished 1-1. Portsmouth won the title with 58 points, and United a close second, just five points behind on 53. Also this year, on 24th August, Old Trafford re-opened as United beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0 in front of 41,748 fans.
9. 1950: Who played in every league game of the 1949-50 season?

Answer: Charlie Mitten

Charlie Mitten scored 16 league goals, including four against Aston Villa in a 7-0 win at Old Trafford.
10. 1951: United were runners-up of division one for the third time in history, but who finished as champions?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham finished on 60 points, four points ahead of United in second. United also crashed out of the FA Cup, with a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City.
