Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the decade of the 1970s, which state hosted the most number of Super Bowls?

Answer: Louisiana

Although Texas, California, and Florida are "bigger states", Louisiana hosted the most Super Bowls with a total of four (IV, VI, IX, and XII). Florida was second with three (V, X, and XIII), followed by California with two (VII and XI), and Texas hosted only one (VIII).
2. How many teams that played in the Super Bowl, had an undefeated Super Bowl record during the first four decades 1960s to 1990s?

Answer: 4

Only four teams were undefeated in their Super Bowl appearances during those four decades:
49ers (5-0; XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, AND XXIX),
Giants (2-0; XXI and XXV),
Jets (1-0; III),
Bears (1-0; XX).
Every other team that appeared in the Super Bowl during those four decades had at least one loss.
3. Of the Super Bowls played in the 1980s (XIV-XXIII), what was the most points scored by the losing team in those games?

Answer: 21

In Super Bowl XVI, the Cincinnati Bengals lost, 26-21, to the San Francisco 49ers. It was the highest point total for a losing team that decade.
4. While the Super Bowl is always a great spectacle, sometimes the halftime shows are much more interesting than the games themselves. Many of the music industry's biggest stars have performed during the intermission. Which of the following acts never had the honor of playing at a Super Bowl halftime show during the first four decades 1960s to 1990s?

Answer: Janet Jackson

Although Janet Jackson had a well-known halftime show performance, along with Justin Timberlake, that infamous event took place in Houston's Reliant Stadium at Super Bowl XXXVIII, in 2004. She did not have an appearance in the 20th century.
5. Prior to Super Bowl XXV (January 1991), every halftime show featured either a jazz band, a big Broadway-like musical performance, or a marching band from a university. But, with the airing of Super Bowl XXV, this trend switched to a more pop-ish halftime show. Which of the following pop artists were the first to appear for the intermission?

Answer: New Kids on the Block

New Kids on the Block was the first pop band to perform during an intermission of a Super Bowl (XXV). Whitney Houston began the show with an unforgettable rendition of the national anthem on the same telecast. A year later, Gloria Estefan got her chance in the Super Bowl halftime spotlight at Super Bowl XXVI, while Menudo never appeared in the 1990s.
6. Dan Reeves was a head coach and led two different franchises to the Super Bowl without getting a victory.

Answer: True

Although he won a Super Bowl championship as a reserve running back for the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V, Dan Reeves was 0 for 4 in the big game as a head coach. Known for turning downtrodden franchises around, Reeves had great success in the regular season and playoffs, but he just could not win that last game. Still, a team could do worse than to have a coach who could reach a Super Bowl as many times as Dan Reeves did.

He led the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl XXI (lost to the Giants, 39-20), Super Bowl XXII (lost to the Redskins, 42-10), and Super Bowl XXIV (lost to the 49ers, 55-10), as well as taking the Atlanta Falcons to Super Bowl XXXIII (lost 34-19) where, ironically, he lost to his former team, the Broncos.
7. The Oakland/LA Raiders were the only team to have participated in a Super Bowl in each decade from the 1960s to the 2000s.

Answer: False

The Raiders almost became the first team to make a trip to the Super Bowl in each decade, but they missed out in participating in one during the 1990s. They made it all the way to the AFC Championship game after the 1990 season, but lost to the Buffalo Bills, 51-3.
8. In 2008, Kurt Warner became the second quarterback to have led two different franchises to the Super Bowl. Who was the first?

Answer: Craig Morton

A former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in the early 1970s, Craig Morton led the Cowboys to Super Bowl V against the Baltimore Colts. Unfortunately, the 'Boys lost that game, 16-13. Then, after the 1977 season, Morton, now the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, led that team to Super Bowl XXII against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, but again, he came up on the wrong end of the final score, 27-10. Earl Morral was almost the first quarterback to have done it when he led the Baltimore Colts to Super Bowl III after Johnny Unitas was injured in the last preseason game of 1968 and, during the Miami Dolphins' undefeated season of 1972, he filled in for an injured Bob Griese and won 10 straight games, including their first-round playoff Cleveland Browns.

After starting the AFC Championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was replaced with a now healthy Griese after struggling in the first half. Griese went on to lead the Dolphins to victory in that game and Super Bowl VII.
9. How many franchises that had at least three different head coaches, made it to the big game during the four decades 1960s to 1990s?

Answer: 3

Three franchises were taken to the big game by at least different three coaches during those four decades:
Dallas Cowboys (Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, and Barry Switzer),
Oakland/LA Raiders (John Rauch, John Madden, Tom Flores), and
Denver Broncos (Red Miller, Dan Reeves, Mike Shanahan).
10. Quarterbacks are arguably the most important players on the field and in Super Bowls played during the 1960s to 1990s, they were named as the game's Most Valuable Player 16 times, more than double that of running backs which were the next group to have won the award. What was the total number of years a quarterback went without winning that trophy before it was awarded to the position again during the first four decades?

Answer: 7 years

After taking the award in four of the first five seasons of Super Bowl play, it would be seven years before another quarterback would be win the MVP award again. Roger Staubach was the last one to win the award in Super Bowl VI, before Terry Bradshaw won back-to-back trophies in Super Bowls XIII and XIV.
