Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following does not have a nickname beginning with Z?

Answer: Zaza Pachulia

Mourning is known as Zo. Zach Randolph is often called Zeebo (probably a play on "Deebo", the big burly character in the movie "Friday"). Isiah Thomas was known by many as Zeke.
2. Damon Stoudamire was known as Mighty Mouse. Name another player's real name who shared a nickname with a cartoon mouse.

Answer: Craig Claxton

Craig Claxton, better known as Speedy (as in the fastest mouse in Mexico), was drafted out of Hofstra in 2000, and won a championship with San Antonio in 2003. I know him as one of the few players under six feet who can dunk.
3. Glenn Robinson goes by the nickname Big Dog, but he was not the first to bear that nickname. Who was first called "Big Dawg"?

Answer: Antoine Carr

Carr was a power forward, and was best known for playing alongside Karl Malone and John Stockton in Utah. He was actually the first player with those new-school tinted goggles.
4. Which of these is not an international player's nickname?

Answer: Darko

Memo is what people call Mehmet Okur. Rasho is short for Radoslav Nesterovic. Hidayet Turkoglu is affectionately called Hedo. Darko Milicic has a nickname, but Darko is his given name. His nickname as a rookie was "The Human Victory Cigar" because the Pistons would only play him at the end of a winning game.
5. Ervin Johnson's nickname is Magic.

Answer: False

Magic Johnson's first name is spelled Earvin. Ervin Johnson is a center who was drafted in the 90's and played for teams such as Seattle, Denver, Milwaukee, and Minnesota.
6. All of these players used their nicknames in place of their first names, except which one?

Answer: Terrell Brandon

Tyrone Bogues was better known as Muggsy. Vernell Coles went by the name Bimbo Coles. Anthony Webb was the high-flying little man we called Spud Webb, who won the 1986 dunk contest.
7. In terms of nicknames, which of the following doesn't belong?

Answer: Dan Majerle

Dan Majerle's nickname was "Thunder Dan". The other three players nicknames were made up of their initials.
8. This player is occasionally referred to as "The Waiter".

Answer: Toni Kukoc

Toni Kukoc was the prototype for today's point power forwards such as Kevin Garnett and Chris Webber, and has come up with some beautiful passes over his years in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee. Mark Jackson's nickname, at least later in his career, was "The Turtle". John Stockton didn't have a widely-known nickname, but bamacrazy tells me that some people called him "Packages" because Karl Malone was "The Mailman".
9. Which former teammate of Michael Jordan's was known as 'Big Smooth'?

Answer: Sam Perkins

Perkins played with Mike at North Carolina, and was drafted immediately after him in 1984. Among other things, Sam Perkins was known for his baby hook shot and for being one of the first near 7-footers to develop into a three-point threat. He once set a record for most threes without missing at 8-8 while playing for Seattle, but that record was later tied by Steve Smith and then broken by Latrell Sprewell with 9-9.
10. Who was known as Big Nasty?

Answer: Corliss Williamson

Although Muresan, Ilgauskas, and Eaton (for you older fans) are indeed big and nasty, the nickname itself belongs to the former Arkansas Razorback, who was drafted in 1995 and won a chamionship playing for Detroit in 2003-2004.
