Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following four goalkeepers who played for the Football Kingz in the old NSL, was both a New Zealand schoolboy Athletics international and an Under 20, Under 23, and senior Soccer international?

Answer: Scott Bishop

Of all four keepers who were selected for full senior international New Zealand soccer teams, the multi-talented Bishop was the only double international.
2. Shortly after his first selection for the senior New Zealand team, this keeper had a massive falling-out with his then club coach, and was never selected again for the national side.

Answer: Scott Bishop

Bishop, who had previously been touted by his then club coach, Ricki Herbert, "has unbelievable talent" and "greatest keeper New Zealand's ever produced", then fell-out with Herbert following a training altercation in late 1997. Bishop and Herbert have not spoken to each other since then.

Herbert became the NZ national coach and the coach of NZ's professional Hyundai A-League team, "The Phoenix". Following their breakup, Bishop has never figured in Herbert's teams.
3. With the competition being nationwide, which club got its name on the Chatham Cup in September 2008 for the first time?

Answer: East Coast Bays

Missing out in either the last eight or last four during its previous prior seasons saw the all-blue Bays boys finally crack the 2008 final. They defeated Dunedin Technical 1-0 at North Harbour before an overwhelmingly pro-Bays local crowd.
4. Which of New Zealand's seven federations inflicted an extremely unpopular "local football only" season on its clubs in 2008?

Answer: United Soccer 1

Against the monumental opposition of his clubs, driven US1 CEO Keith Johnston decreed that US1 clubs would play football in their own local "premiership" in 2008. It quickly became a predictable farce. Lacking real opposition represented by the inclusion of AFF and Force Three's elite clubs, prior to its cup triumph, East Coast Bays sleepwalked through the season to remain undefeated.
5. Announced as 1200 by New Zealand Football as the number that attended the Waitakere United versus Auckland City New Zealand Football Championship match in 2006, what was the more accurate number estimated by some players in the match?

Answer: 150

Thankfully on the cusp of a return to a club-based national league, the eight franchise national league clubs of the NZFC regularly had their attendance figures grossly exaggerated by New Zealand Football. This match was no exception. The franchise league attracted nothing like the popularity or following enjoyed by its club-based counterpart.
6. Prior to its dismantling by US1 CEO Johnston, how many of his US1 clubs were in the 12-team three-federation Northern Premier Soccer League?

Answer: 6

Waitakere City, Birkenhead United, North Shore, Albany United, Glenfield Rovers, and East Coast Bays. Albany were then relegated to a non-existent first division at the end of that season, only to be reinstated to the "Johnston travesty".
7. Which of Auckland's AFF premier league teams plays in AC Milan's red and black vertical stripes, black, and black strip?

Answer: Metro FC

If this strip isn't one of the best looking in the world.
8. Which Wellington team plays in Inter-Milan's blue and black vertical stripes, black, and black strip?

Answer: Miramar Rangers

Sorry, a good-looking strip too, but lacks the "lift" that the red lends. Suffers a bit under floodlights too, in my opinion.
9. Which English-born player, banned for life once for head-butting a referee following a match, somewhat unbelievably went on to briefly coach both the New Zealand national team, and its only professional team, the then Football Kingz?

Answer: Ken Dugdale

Originally banned for life, only to see that sentence essentially reduced to a slap on the hand with a wet bus ticket given the offence. Little baldy Dugdale must surely consider himself a very lucky man to have got back into the game.
10. Which New Zealand keeper also played for Wigan Athletic's first-team in England?

Answer: Scott Bishop

Although there is a suggestion that Peter Whiting also had some limited success in England, and Mark Paston also enjoyed some success in England and Scotland, Bishop signed on for Wigan and played as number-one before a horrific training accident wrecked his UK career.
